From one acclaimed book from another, it looks like Tom Hanks and Tom Tykwer aren't done tackling well-received pieces of literature, though hopefully this time, Hanks will leave his various grab bag of accents at home.

Anyone who thought that Disney/Pixar's "Toy Story" franchise would really be kaput following "Toy Story 3" (a movie that practically crow-barred tears out of even the most hardened misanthrope) were, of course, out of their collective minds. Since the third film was released, we've had three dazzling theatrical short films ("Hawaiian Vacation," "Small Fry," and "Partysaurus Rex") and idle chatter of a fourth film, while the characters still live on in the ever-evolving Toy Story Midway Mania attraction at both the Disney California Adventure and Disney's Hollywood Studios parks on either coast. And come Halloween, we'll get something even more special – a 22-minute TV special called "Toy Story of Terror," the first image of which debuted today. Also, former Pixar director Brenda Chapman weighs in on the controversy surrounding her "Brave" character Merida becoming an official Disney Princess.

It has been three years since Paul Greengrass' last film, the lukewarm "Green Zone," and while in the interim there was much chatter about another return to 'Bourne,' the director himself has buckled down and hit the open water for his next effort "Captain Phillips," and damn, does it ever look good.

As part of our steady quest to go cold turkey from the Oscar season over the next few days, we've been running down some of our possibilities for the films that will be elbowing each other for awards in 2014. Yesterday, we looked at Best Picture, and today, we turn to Best Actor, won this year by Daniel Day-Lewis.

Down at HBO, World War II is in the cards. OK, figuratively. But the Big Bertha of premium cable has taken to the mic to confirm details of another release which has the makings of a new box-set staple and a veritable howitzer to the already-frayed morale of rival networks.

Review: 'Cloud Atlas' Is Bold, Messy & Disappointingly Unimaginative

With The Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer literally throwing a critic off the roof of a building to his death in the opening moments of the nearly three-hour "Cloud Atlas," it's clear that they aren't concerned in the slightest with how this ambitious effort will be received. And you certainly have to give the trio of directors some respect for their approach, which tag teams an all-star cast, gives them multiple roles and spreads the story across nearly a half dozen time periods. But for all their boldness in narrative approach, the adaptation of David Mitchell's "Cloud Atlas" is also a mess, with an attempt to mix its various genres under a universal thematic banner that never quite coheres.

"Cloud Atlas" features many things -- narratives, characters, special effects...but it also has a lot of makeup. A lot. With the extended principal cast -- Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Sturgess, Ben Whishaw, Jim Broadbent, Hugo Weaving, Hugh Grant, and Bae Doona -- playing multiple roles in a tale that spans centuries, the trick was making them look similar, yet also distinct in each case. And for the most part it works, and you don't really notice it. But time to time, it is distracting. (We're looking at you, Thug Hanks).

Let’s get this out of the way up front. If you want to walk into the Tom Tykwer and the Wachowski Starship's “Cloud Atlas” pure, do not watch the video below. Don’t say we didn’t warn you. However, if you've read the book already it probably won't be too big of a deal.

An hour or so ago, most of the moviegoing world had their eyes on the trailer premiere for Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln," tipped by many to lead to Oscars for both the director and its star, Daniel Day-Lewis. And yet at the same time, last year's Best Director Academy Award winner, and one of only five living actors with as many gold statues as Day-Lewis, were sneakily making plans for a film that looks like it could be a future awards juggernaut, and may be bringing along a recent Best Actress winner too.
