Benedict Cumberbatch
Two filmmakers are currently trying to get to the top of an "Everest" film first: Doug Liman and Baltasar Kormakur. But the question is which one will get there first as one has lost a lead, and the other some financing.

Tom Hardy Mad Max Fury Road
The “Mad Max” franchise has never been one suited to swift and easy productions, with much of the films' narrative devoted to high-speed chases across dystopian deserts with unbearable conditions. When it came to the series' fourth installment, “Mad Max: Fury Road,” with Tom Hardy as the titular lead, they were better prepared and came in slightly over schedule on a July-November production last year. But as time has passed without news of a clear release date, we've recently learned there's still a bit more apocalyptic carnage to be shot.

Locke Tom Hardy
Of all the genres, the single location film is perhaps one of the hardest to get right. For one, you need a hell of an actor (or actors) to hold the attention for even the briefest of running times. You also need a story that coherently keeps the actors in place, with enough of a hook to keep you involved. And you need to keep things visually interesting enough to stop it being too static without being showy. It’s a big ask, Hitchcock was the master of the style, and there are a select few other examples, but most turn out poorly.

Terry Gilliam
There are few cinematic raconteurs as lively and interesting as Terry Gilliam, so you can imagine that when we chatted with him earlier this month, our conversation wound up being fairly wide-ranging. Yesterday, we ran the first part of our talk with Gilliam, focused solely on his forthcoming sci-fi effort "The Zero Theorem." And today, we bring the rest of our discussion with the filmmaker which fans and those just interested in the industry in general, will want to take a look at.

Locke Tom Hardy
While festivals are usually the place where esteemed pictures tend to peacock, they also provide an avenue for edgier, more experimental ventures to get their footing, and Venice will have one we're definitely curious about. And it's not just because of the talent involved, which includes stars Tom Hardy and Ruth Wilson ("Luther," "The Lone Ranger"), screenwriter and director Steven Knight ("Eastern Promises," "Redemption") and executive producer Joe Wright ("Atonement," "Anna Karenina").

So, Japanese filmmaker and cult fave Takashi Miike, after more than 60 features that have included over-the-edge stuff like "Ichi The Killer," "Visitor Q," "Audition," "Gozu" and more (and by more, we mean that he's done everything from bloodbath gangster flicks to mainstream comedies to musicals to surreal mindfucks), he's coming to Hollywood. Well, sort of.

Bronson, Bane, Forrest Bondurant, Eames...Elton John? Is it time for Tom Hardy to sing and sashay across a stage wearing wild and garish costumes? If movie producers get their wish, it might be a possibility.

We're two years from the first announcements about "Cicero," a gangster flick at Warner Bros. that would see Tom Hardy take on the role of Al Capone. Cool, right? There was early talk of the project expanding into a trilogy, but that has died down along with most news about the project. Last we heard, the movie was aiming to start shooting this year with David Yates directing. Clearly, that's not gonna happen, but the endeavor is far from dead.

If there's any doubt, Tom Hardy is ready to break out in a big way. While he's not quite a household name (seriously, just go ask your Mom if she knows who Tom Hardy is), his moment of omnipresence is fast arriving. Of course, "Inception" and "The Dark Knight Rises" certainly boosted his profile in a major way, but "Warrior" proved his name was not yet a ticket buying incentive for many. But that's likely to soon change -- "Mad Max: Fury Road" is in the can and awaiting a release date, and in the first half of 2013 he's embarking on two movies with Noomi Rapace, "Animal Rescue" (which recently also added Matthias Schoenaerts) and "Child 44" and starts shooting the real time thriller "Locke" next month. Now, another movie has been added to his roster.

It feels like it's been quite a long time since we saw Tom Hardy on screen. But in fact, he's been working consistently, with five films in the last eighteen months, and the actor's such a chameleon that it's hard to draw a line between Ricky Tarr in "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" and Bane in "The Dark Knight Rises," especially as Hardy spent most of 2012 in Africa shooting the Mad Max movie "Fury Road."
