While its Cannes premiere more or less defined John Hillcoat's Prohibition-era bootlegging drama "Lawless" as bonafide genre material and nothing more (doesn't bother us, really), it take a better man than this writer to not be excited by the return of the Aussie filmmaker with a phenomenal cast which includes Tom Hardy, Shia Labeouf, Jessica Chastain, Guy Pearce, Gary Oldman and Mia Wasikowska, among others.

Before "The Dark Knight Rises," "Inception," "Warrior," "Bronson" and "Rocknrolla," Tom Hardy was at best, a blip on the radar. An actor primarily known in his native U.K., but even then, was hardly the star he is now. And indeed, even before all that, the theater actor scored one of biggest opportunities of his early career, the villain role of Praetor Shinzon in "Star Trek: Nemesis." And now, thanks to the interwebs, we can see the talent that helped land him the gig.

If there's one thing we unapologetically love about the ambitious and occasionally irksome "The Dark Knight Rises," it's Tom Hardy and his deliciously evil voice as Bane, the muscular zealot behind much of the movie's jumbo-sized mayhem. While some audience members still claim that his voice was indecipherable, this was a much bigger problem a few months ago, when the IMAX-shot aerial prologue was shown attached to select prints of Brad Bird's "Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol." Now someone has done a compare-and-contrast, while details of a brief deleted scene have also emerged.

"The Dark Knight Rises" is finally in theaters, and has been inspiring furious debate all weekend and into this week. But what there's relatively little of, compared to most major blockbusters, is thoughts on the film, and its production, from the filmmakers and cast themselves. Christopher Nolan is relatively press-shy (he doesn't do online press at all, outside press conferences), and compared to the onslaught of interviews that most tentpoles unleash, "The Dark Knight Rises" knew it was a sure thing, and didn't feel the need to chuck out the same sound bites endlessly.

While Tom Hardy made his biggest impression on North American audiences with his dashing, charming turn in Christopher Nolan's "Inception" (with that persona used to far lesser effect in "This Means War"), this summer he's offering up two roles which find him brooding behind a mask, and under a hat. The first, of course, is as the hulk-tacular Bane in "The Dark Knight Rises," where even with his face obscured, he commands considerable terror. And in just about a month, he's back at the multiplex as the monosyllabic (but also quite hilarious) Forrest Bondurant in John Hillcoat's "Lawless."

An action opus that manages at to be both viscerally and intellectually engaging, Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated third Batman film comes full circle, examining both the Dark Knight and the society that produced him without sacrificing any of the sweeping thrills for which the series is known. A literate, thoughtful and invigorating finale, “The Dark Knight Rises” delivers everything audiences ask for and then some, albeit in fewer of the ways that they might expect.
