Only Lovers Left Alive
Only Jim Jarmusch could dive into the vampire genre and instead of focusing on the fangs and blood, use it to explore existential ennui, culture, humanity and, of course, music. "Only Lovers Left Alive" finds the writer/director at his wittiest in years, delivering one of his best movies periods. And a big part of that success is down to his two leads.

Thor 2: Dark World, Post Mortem
After rolling out first in the rest of the world, this past weekend saw the U.S. release of "Thor: The Dark World," the third adventure to feature the Norse god of thunder, after "Thor" and "The Avengers," and the eighth movie in Marvel's cinematic masterplan. As you might have assumed, the movie's a massive hit: an $86 million opening weekend, to add to the $240 million it's already taken abroad.

Thor: The Dark World
The first "Thor" movie was something of a risk for Marvel. Wisecracking Robert Downey Jr. in a (relatively) grounded real world setting was one thing, but a Viking god from space, played by a complete unknown and directed by a man best known for Shakespeare adaptations was quite another. But the 2011 film, while flawed in many ways, proved surprisingly entertaining and teed up both its title character and his villainous brother Loki for a return appearance in the team-up movie "The Avengers," which turned out to be an absolute megahit. As such, the studio must be feeling on surer ground with "Thor: The Dark World."

Only Lovers Left Alive
From Cannes to Toronto to New York to London, as Jim Jarmusch's elegant and beautiful "Only Lovers Left Alive" has cruised the festival circuit, it has won over the hearts of various Playlist members at each stop along the way. It's easily his best film since "Dead Man" (though I'm one of the few who adores "The Limits Of Control") and will undoubtedly rank among his finest accomplishments. And while it's a hard movie to cut down to trailer form, this new international spot does a pretty nice job.

Guillermo del Toro's next phantasmagorical outing is getting a new moniker. His forthcoming Gothic romance "Crimson Peak," starring the scarily great Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska, Charlie Hunnam and Tom Hiddleston, has been given the more anonymously spooky title "Haunted Peak" and a tentative release date of April, 2015. Shooting begins in February at Pinewood Toronto Studios and lasts until May. In between now and then, del Toro will direct the pilot for "The Strain," an FX series based on a trilogy of lousy vampire novels the filmmaker co-wrote with "The Town" scribe Chuck Hogan.

Benedict Cumberbatch
Two filmmakers are currently trying to get to the top of an "Everest" film first: Doug Liman and Baltasar Kormakur. But the question is which one will get there first as one has lost a lead, and the other some financing.

While she arrived a little late, Tilda Swinton made a grand entrance at the New York Film Festival press conference for “Only Lovers Left Alive," Jim Jarmusch’s meditative, moody and yet hilarious look at a vampire relationship that has spanned centuries. The movie stars Tom Hiddleston and Swinton as Adam and Eve, two vampire lovers separated by continents, she in Tangiers and he in bombed out Detroit. But the duo have to reuinte when Adam, an Über-hip but anti-hipster musician, who would rather not have his music out in the world because that would taint it, goes through a kind of existential and perhaps even suicidal crisis (read our full review here).
