He's certainly made no secret of his methods, which have included getting drunk on moonshine for "Lawless" to the point of nearly causing Mia Wasikowska to exit the movie. He also dropped acid to help in his preparation for "The Necessary Death Of Charlie Countryman." But his rigorous approach doesn't always make him friends with his colleagues, and the news yesterday that he had left the Broadway production of "Orphans" was just the tip of the iceberg.

Jack Kerouac's "On the Road" has been heralded for decades: an important novel, a cultural signifier, a sociological landmark, a cracking good read. It's also been considered "unfilmable" -- but now Walter Salles ("The Motorcycle Diaries," "Dark Water") brings the novel to the screen, and "The Motorcycle Diaries" turns out to be a pretty good template for understanding how Salles has shot his adaptation. "On the Road," like 'Diaries,' is scenic and episodic, full of youth's passion but with a shade of the future yet to come dimming the brightness of its vision, as a charismatic young man travels with another young man, saying little but watching everything along the way.

While "Attack The Block" didn't quite light up the box office this summer, the alien invasion flick firmly established itself as a new cult classic of the genre, and the film's star, John Boyega, emerged as a new talent to keep an eye on. Certainly, Spike Lee sat up and took notice, casting him in the lead of the HBO series he's producing. But before that, Boyega will have a small role in the upcoming British drama "Junkhearts" alongside Eddie Marsan, Tom Sturridge and Romola Garai, and it looks pretty promising.
