With the exception of Walter, a perfectly serviceable character who joined an ensemble already way too rich with personalities to add another, 2011’s “The Muppets” was sort of a perfect reintroduction to Jim Henson’s most famous creations: playing directly to the notion that Kermit and the gang were outdated, Jason Segel’s pet project highlighted their timeless appeal with a story as wholesome and yet subversive as the show and movies that inspired it.

Mr. Peabody & Sherman
Before our very early screening of "Mr. Peabody and Sherman," the new 3D adaptation of the Jay Ward characters that originated on "The Rocky & Bullwinkle Show," director Rob Minkoff addressed the audience (comprised mostly of children). He told us that we were one of the first audiences to see the movie, then told a rambling story about the time he met Billy Wilder in the airport. At some point he revealed that this was his first animated feature since directing "The Lion King" for Disney in the early nineties. It was about the only time in his intro that the kids in the audience actually reacted. And once the movie started, one thing became very clear: "Mr. Peabody and Sherman" is no "Lion King."

Muppets Again
2011's "The Muppets" arrived on a wave of nostalgia and some very savvy marketing, that converged into a final product that was a big ball of fun (remember those parody trailers?). This time around, that wistful feeling has faded, the marketing has been more traditional and Disney sort of just expects you to show up.

Mr. Peabody & Sherman
When it comes to commercially viable properties that appeal to modern children, we can't help but think that "Mr. Peabody & Sherman," based on characters from the "Peabody's Improbably History" segments of "The Rocky & Bullwinkle Show," might be a little dusty for today's young audiences. Then again, DreamWorks Animation, a studio that knows how to hip anything up, is reviving the time-traveling characters. And just in time for Halloween, a new set posters for the movie shows Mr. Peabody, the talking day, entrepreneur, and Olympic medalist (dog), in the guise of various historical figures.

Hey, remember “The Switch”? That Elmore Leonard adaptation, which is a prequel to “Jackie Brown”? Writer/director Dan Schechter is attached to it. Does any of that ring a bell? Well, if you do remember and have been looking forward to this, rest assured, it’s still happening, albeit with some casting changes.

Late last year word arrived that none other than Ricky Gervais landed the lead role in the “The Muppets 2” with “Modern Family” star Ty Burrell taking over for Christoph Waltz in one of the other two major parts. At the time it was rumored that the film was “a Euro-caper,” and now THR is reporting that Tina Fey has snagged the female lead role opposite fellow Golden Globe host Gervais.

Ty Burrell Replaces Christoph Waltz In 'The Muppets' Sequel

After “The Muppets” stuck fairly faithfully to the tone and style of the original Muppet big screen outing, 1979’s “The Muppet Movie,” it appears that its sequel will follow the “The Great Muppet Caper” in very much the same way. As the title suggests, the movie was indeed a great caper. Set in London, the film followed Kermit and Fozzie (playing twin brothers no less!) as a pair of reporters sent to interview the rich victim of a jewel thief. The new film is set to go in front of cameras in London later this winter, although we suspect the story could potentially stray into different parts of Europe, and we know that two of the key human characters will be a Russian femme fatale and an Interpol agent. We had expected Christoph Waltz to play the latter, but there’s now another actor being lined up for the role.

It was only last month that we were noting how Emmy winning "Modern Family" star Ty Burrell was making some serious strides into the movie world in 2012, with indie flicks "Goats" and "Butter" on the way, as well as having recently signed up for the "Jackie Brown" prequel "Switch." And he's taking yet another part, though he won't be working with one of the biggest A-list actors in Hollywood.

The Emmy-winning star of ABC's hit comedy "Modern Family" has been marking his territory in the indie film world in a pretty serious way lately. In 2012, we'll be seeing the actor two films -- the coming-of-age tale "Goats," which recently premiered at Sundance, and the quasi-political comedy "Butter" with Jennifer Garner and Olivia Wilde -- and now he's lined up a project that has been the subject of a lot chatter over the past week.
