Even without being massively fond of many of the films produced from his screenplays (not least his pretty bad directorial debut "London Boulevard"), we're fond of William Monahan and his salty dialogue, best embodied in his Oscar-winning script for "The Departed," and we're always hopeful that he'll come up with the goods. So despite our feelings about "London Boulevard," we're hopeful for his follow-up "Mojave," not least because of the cast he's assembling.

You might think that Lars Von Trier's idea to shoot an erotic drama featuring hardcore sex might scare Hollywood types away. You would be wrong. With Shia LaBeouf, Jamie Bell and (oddly) Christian Slater among those taking part, another unexpected name has joined the cast.

NBC has been pushing hard to make a big hit out of their musical drama "Smash." A soundtrack of the tunes from the show is on the way, it has already been renewed for a second season, and as the first season winds down, a pretty big star has been enlisted to help sweep in ratings.

From behind, we watch a man in ragged clothes look longingly through the window of a fancy Belle Epoque Parisian restaurant. Inside, richly attired women whisper secrets over brimful glasses of champagne and decadent platters laden with food. Later, the hungry man in his mean garret relives the moment, jealousy and bitterness at the injustice of his situation playing across his face, before the memory of such opulence actually makes him cry. It's a convincing, well-observed moment that sets up a lot of what we need to know about the man's character. Oh wait, did we mention the man is played by Robert Pattinson?

So, did you think the brief love affair with Marilyn Monroe was going to end once the awards season was over, and "My Week With Marilyn" faded from view? Guess again. The next twelve months will be something of a pivot point for Robert Pattinson, as by this time next year, the "Twilight" series, which made his name, will be over, and the risk of him becoming a vampiric version of Mark Hamill -- never able to escape the shadow of his mega franchise -- will start to come up; while he's had a few modest successes, none have been massive, or particularly critically acclaimed. But the actor is clearly taking advice from the right people, with two indie films on the way with some pretty high pedigree, the second of which, David Cronenberg's "Cosmopolis" is one of our most anticipated films of 2012.

The Weinstein Company may have another Oscar darling on their hands. A year after grabbing $400 million worldwide and scads of major awards for “The King’s Speech,” The Brothers W paid $7 million for the domestic rights (via Deadline) to another film about British aristocracy, nabbing “The Iron Lady” starring Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher. Producers only showed five minutes of the film before the bidding started between the Weinsteins, Summit and Relativity, though all someone had to say was “Streep as Thatcher” to ensure this would be a major purchase and, as planned by TWC, a high profile late ‘11 release. Expect it to be a big dog in the awards race.

More Casting Bits: Alice Eve & Liev Schreiber Join Director Mark Pellington, Craig Bierko Will Play A 'Stooges' VillainProducers in Cannes talk loose. There's a bevy of talks, negotiations and (shudder) pre-attachment deals going on around the Croisette this week, but don't be surprised if all the actors announced don't actually appear in the films they're touted to be in (see last year when, for example Amy Adams was listed in the original version of John Hillcoat's "The Wettest County," which died and then came back to life this year). A lot of these are early teasing promises to get investors involved and sometimes they work, sometimes they don't.

You’ll recall in 2008 we did, what we thought, was a very good job of casting Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds” (some of us are still convinced our picks were better than Q.T.’s, but that’s another story). And unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that Tarantino has recently finished his latest script, one entitled “Django Unchained.” So yes, we’re at it again.
