Picked up very early on by The Weinstein Company and selected as the closing entry for the Toronto International Film Festival, hopes seemed to be high for "Song For Marion." A Brit dramedy about old people and singing with cantankerous Terence Stamp in the lead? It could have been a contender, we suppose, but after failing to make any impact at all, the studio is now rushing the film out into theaters in eight weeks with a brand new title.

Reviews

There is a certain strain of mid-budgeted British comedy -- films like "Calendar Girls," "Made In Dagenham," "Greenfingers," "The Full Monty" etc. -- that generally tends to find an audience on both sides of the ocean, make a modest profit, and then land on specialty cable where it lives on in reruns forever. They all have the easily recognizable stock characters, follow a famililar arc and culminate in manufactured emotion designed to make you feel good. And while it's hard to fault a film for being exactly what it sets out to be and nothing more, there is something almost offensive about how inoffensive the template guiding "Song For Marion" is.

Well, depending on your disposition (and the amount of chemicals you've ingested today), you'll either find the trailer for "Song for Marion" to be hopelessly charming or an absolute disaster that makes you want to cover yourself in bread crumbs and be slowly devoured by a flock of hungry seagulls. You'll have to wait a little bit for our Toronto International Film Festival review (the film closes the festival in ten days or so, but hey, the trailer is worth a watch at least. Starring Vanessa Redgrave, Christopher Eccleston, Terence Stamp, and the almost painfully adorable Gemma Arterton, it's a movie about an old folks choir. Guh.

Well, here's a movie that's been keeping below the radar....Colin Firth and Emily Blunt have teamed up for the dark comedy "Arthur Newman" (formerly known as "Arthur Newman, Golf Pro"). The film is making its World Premiere at TIFF, and we have the first image of the two leads and official synopsis. Read on:

Way back in 2010, ShoWest named Alex Pettyfer as one of their Stars Of Tomorrow, a dubious honor also bestowed at the time to Vanessa Hudgens, with the two of them pairing in the soon to be released box office bomb "Beastly." Time marched on. Now in 2012, Hudgens is working with Harmony Korine ("Spring Breakers") and Pettyfer with Steven Soderbergh ("Magic Mike"), movies in which they will both feature in little to no clothing. All this to say is that tomorrow never knows, but Pettyfer's rise continues as the actor joins a pretty high profile project.

When it came to our super-early Oscar predictions last year, we weren't too far off when it came to Best Picture, or even the lead acting categories. But Supporting Actor & Actress? That was something of a disaster. Ok, so we called Christopher Plummer's victory, but aside from that, we were way off.

After a few weeks where the critics got to have the limelight, the awards barometer swung back to the practicioners this morning, as the Screen Actors Guild revealed their nominations for their annual awards, making them the first major guild out the gate. And, true to form, for the most part they played it safe with a firmly middlebrow selection of nominees.

Last year, the awards sweep of "The King's Speech" was, in a way, begun by the British Independent Film Awards, an organisation that's been running for a decade-and-a-half, of increasingly prominent stature, who anointed Tom Hooper's period drama their Best British Film Award, beginning a string of glory that took it all the way to Best Picture at the Oscars. However, it led to many accusing the body, by giving their top-prize to a solid, but safe seemingly made to pick up BAFTAs, of losing their edge.

Back in July, after taking a look at the script for Britflick "Song for Marion" which, at the time, was just about to start shooting with stars Terence Stamp, Vanessa Redgrave and Gemma Arterton, we wrote "If we were Harvey Weinstein we’d be snapping up the rights immediately; undoubtedly reminiscent of films like 'Brassed Off,' 'The Full Monty' and 'Calendar Girls,' with a little Mike Leigh thrown in, it’s rather lovely, and in places very funny, but Williams also brings emotion that’s perhaps more raw than similar films to the table. Mark our words, given the giant success of the choir-based 'Glee,' it’s got all the makings of a major sleeper hit, and Stamp has the kind of role that stinks of Oscar."
