Michael Mann has never been the most prolific filmmaker, but it’s rare during the course of his career that he’s taken any more than three years between films. We assume that it is largely down to the ill-fated HBO show “Luck” that Mann hasn’t had a film in cinemas since “Public Enemies” in 2009, but it looks like we won’t be waiting too much longer with his currently untitled cyber theft thriller set to go in front of cameras in China next month.

Just as the "Harry Potter" franchise begat a number of costly imitators that failed to catch on (just think: "Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events," "The Spiderwick Chronicles," "Cirque du Freak"), so too will the unstoppable "Twilight" franchise breed countless would-be successors, each with some kind of otherworldly overtones and always with star-crossed lovers that defy the odds to be together (hello, "I Am Number Four"). Earlier this month we had zombies-in-love lark "Warm Bodies" and now we get "Beautiful Creatures," which transplants the Pacific Northwest setting of "Twilight" for the earthy Deep South and swaps that series' emphasis on vampires and werewolves for some much-needed attention to witches. Also, it's the kind of movie that heavily features not only Civil War flashbacks but also modern day kids participating in Civil War battlefield recreations. I do declare!

Slowly shaping up to be one of the more unique productions this year, “The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby” has gradually acquired a talented cast fit for its two-film premise -- that of a troubled marriage told, in each installment, from the husband and the wife's perspective. A few weeks back Jessica Chastain and James McAvoy were locked in as the couple, and now a slew of new names have come up just as the film heads into shooting.

With her performances in “Doubt” and “The Help” both garnering her deserved Oscar buzz, actress Viola Davis quickly attached herself to another awards season hopeful, the education-reform drama “Won't Back Down.” Apparently 20th Century Fox believes so too, and along with moving the film's release date from the spring to fall, they've released a number of clips showcasing Davis' acting chops as well.

Since picking up her first Oscar nomination when she stole the show in "Doubt," Viola Davis has developed into one of the most respected actresses in Hollywood -- someone you know you can go to for a guaranteed good performance, no matter the role. And now that she's won that well-deserved Oscar for Best Actress the world is her oyster and we can't wait... Sorry, what's that? You're saying Davis didn't win? Meryl Streep did? Aww man. Well that sucks, but who knows, maybe Davis has just found the project that will see her take home the little golden bald man next time.

At the Academy Awards, Best Picture might be the big prize, but the ones that both the winners and the audience have the most emotional connection to tend to be the acting prizes. Seeing a beloved star, or a fresh-faced newcomer, finally pick up a statue more often than not ends up leading the mainstream media coverage; it's always more moving than some producer's acceptance speech.

At a recent private luncheon for awards contender "The Help" at Desmond's in New York, Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer didn't touch their dessert, a chocolate pie/cake hybrid -- did they know something the rest of us weren't privy to? Speaking very slowly as if it were a warning, Davis teased, "I probably should not have dessert here," before revealing her real reason: she had a stash of Ladurée macarons back at her hotel. Laughed Spencer, "I'm just glad they didn't make our chocolate pie."

We really like Maggie Gyllenhaal. We really like Viola Davis too. We like this picture of the two of them looking happy and emotional from 20th Century Fox's upcoming release "Won't Back Down." We like that the film's supporting cast includes Holly Hunter, Oscar Isaac and Lance Reddick. Hell, we even kind of like the fact that Ving Rhames is in this movie. But that, I'm afraid, is where our optimism ends.

So, did you think the brief love affair with Marilyn Monroe was going to end once the awards season was over, and "My Week With Marilyn" faded from view? Guess again. The famed actress is one of the few Hollywood icons who continues to fascinate, influence and be commemorated and a star studded documentary is on the way that will once again peel back the layers and try and get to the heart of the mystery behind Marilyn Monroe.
