Cannes: Alexander Payne May Do His Sci-Fi Film Soon; Bruce Dern Calls Him One Of 6 Directing Geniuses

This morning, Alexander Payne's black and white, father/son roadtrip film, "Nebraska," debuted in Cannes. Starring the unlikely trio of Bruce Dern, comedian Will Forte and Stacy Keach, “Nebraska” centers on a poor old man (Dern) living in Montana who repeatedly escapes from his house to try to go to Nebraska to collect a sweepstakes prize he thinks he has won. Frustrated by his increasing dementia, his family debates putting him into a nursing home -- until one of his two sons (Forte) finally offers to take his father by car, even as he realizes the futility of it all. It’s a comedy, and while our reviewer didn’t necessarily love it, she called it a “small-scale quixotic adventure about the importance of dreams,” and coming from Alexander Payne it's probably worth giving a shot, even if it didn't surprise us as much as we’d like.

There’s been some confusion about the look of Alexander Payne’s upcoming drama, “Nebraska” which will be in official competition at the Cannes Film Festival later this month (fyi, if you’re headed to France, it’s playing late in the schedule.) Original reports had it pegged as shot in black and white and subsequent pieces said black and white wouldn’t be cost effective and Paramount, who was financing, forced Payne to shoot in color.

There’s acting and then there’s “acting.” The first requires building credible characters and relationships, developing organic conflicts within the framework of a concrete story. The second involves loading up a story with excessive clutter that it drowns out any work of which the actors are capable, turning them into drama automatons: it’s mostly reacting, both removing the burden of work from most performers while also placing a greater spotlight on their very presence, as they are forced to “react” instead of act. This also helps illustrate the difference between drama and melodrama.

One Way Or Another, Will Forte Says 'MacGruber 2' Is Going To Happen

While "MacGruber" didn't exactly light up the box office a few years, it's deranged sense of humor and outright absurdity landed the movie a devoted following, who have been vocal about wanting to see a sequel. And in this era of Kickstarting/rebooting everything, perhaps it's not impossible. But last summer, Will Forte wasn't so optimistic. "We would love... we had so much fun doing that. We're proud of it, and we jokingly talk about the sequel all the time. But I don't think anybody in their right mind would give us any money for it. If somebody gives us money for it...," he said. But perhaps he's feeling a bit more hopeful? Or maybe he's joking again.

The Tribeca Film Festival is rolling out more first-looks. First off, is director Steph Green’s latest endeavor, entitled "Run and Jump." The film marks Green’s return to Tribeca after winning in the Best Short Narrative category in 2008 for her film "New Boy." "Run and Jump" stars "Saturday Night Live" alumnus Will Forte in a rare dramatic turn (perhaps a preview of things to come in Alexander Payne's "Nebraska"), Ruth McCabe, and Edward MacLiam. It follows an Irish wife and mother who find herself having to band her family together after her husband suffers a stroke.

Well, that was seemingly easy enough. After toying with the idea of Gene Hackman, Robert Forster, Jack Nicholson, Robert Duvall and Bryan Cranston for the lead of his upcoming film "Nebraska"-- along with Casey Affleck and Paul Rudd for the supporting role in a father/son road trip tale -- director Alexander Payne, finally settled on the unlikely pair of Bruce Dern and "MacGruber" star Will Forte.

Review: 'That's My Boy' Predictably Juvenile & Surprisingly Far Uglier Than The Usual Adam Sandler Offering

Adam Sandler, comedian, A-List star, and leading man of this Friday’s “That’s My Boy,” is not an idiot. Dedicated to preserving his brand, his films have effectively raised a generation, from the sophomoric absurdity of “Billy Madison” to, uh, the sophomoric banality of “Grown Ups.” You can’t keep playing the same notes forever, and Sandler is not the most diverse instrument, so aside from token experiments (“Punch Drunk Love” certainly stands out), “That’s My Boy” is something of a departure: a hard-R rated film featuring an unfamiliar collaborator in director Sean Anders (“Hot Tub Time Machine”) and a co-star who actually makes Sandler, for the first time ever, come across as an elder.

Will Forte Says There Won't Be A 'MacGruber' Sequel After All

Beleive it or not, but "MacGruber" is a favorite among many of The Playlisters. For real. If you think we're just a bunch of art house snobs, you can throw this movie on and we'll happily laugh our asses off. And we were pretty excited when a couple of weeks ago, director Jorma Taccone revealed that he was developing a sequel to the movie with co-writers John Solomon and Will Forte (also the star). But it looks like that news was more just a fantasy than reality.
