Concussions are an issue for the NFL that is not going away. Just this week, football legend and Hall Of Fame quarterback Dan Marino sued the organization for injuries resulting from concussions, while the NFL has taken considerable criticism for not doing enough to protect players from harm. And it's against that backdrop which makes this news a lot more interesting.

Brilliance Will Smith
Will Smith has bowed out of the Legendary Pictures' David Koepp-penned adaptation of Marcus Sakey's novel "Brilliance." Set to be helmed by Julius Onah, the film centers on a group of people with remarkable powers (mutants? miracles?) and an endowed federal agent who must stop a rogue "brilliant" from starting a civil war.

After Earth, Will Smith
It's game day. The Academy Awards ceremony obvious takes place this evening and so like clockwork, the ignominious folks that run the Razzies Awards have unveiled their list for the worst movies of the year. The biggest story this year is that the Razzie committee failed to award Adam Sandler anything. Odd given how much the organization seems to loath Sandler and all his comedies. And oh yes, “Grown Ups 2” was nominated in several worst categories, but the Razzies saw fit to see many other films are far more egregious in failure.

Brilliance Will Smith
Having just wrapped on the Glenn Ficarra/John Requa comedy “Focus,” it looks like Will Smith is ready to give the sci-fi genre another chance. He’s in talks to lead “Brilliance,” which is based on the Marcus Sakey novel of the same name. In a world where one percent of all children are born as “brilliants,” Will Smith plays federal agent Nick Cooper, a fellow brilliant who’s especially gifted at hunting down terrorists. But in order to track down a brilliant that’s been deemed the most dangerous man alive, Cooper will have to violate everything he believes in.

Winter's Tale
Akiva Goldsman is one of those Hollywood screenwriters who has accrued a fair amount of animosity over the years, both because of his perceived lack of talent (he did have a hand in scripting "Batman & Robin," "The Da Vinci Code," and "Lost in Space," amongst others) and for his almost unparalleled level of success (he won a Screenplay Oscar for his work on Ron Howard's "A Beautiful Mind," and in the process taught us all that mental illness could be cured through the healing power of love). Regardless of what you think of him, Goldsman has genuine power, and for the past few years has used that power to secure funding for a lavish adaptation of novelist Mark Helprin's goopy 1983 supernatural romance "Winter's Tale." It is the ultimate Akiva Goldsman statement, mixing both his propensity for high concept gobbledygook with cloying, saccharine sentimentality. The result is a colossal folly the likes of which we haven't seen in years. It's truly unbelievable. We're still reeling.

Independence Day
Yes, no, maybe: those are the three answers Will Smith has given to 20th Century Fox about returning for "Independence Day 2" aka "ID Forever" over the past few years. But now it seems he's made up his mind. Almost.

American Hustle
The small screen continues to be a place of refuge for filmmakers looking to create work outside the tentpole-crazed studio system and the latest carpetbagger is none other than David O. Russell getting in on the action. Per Deadline, the “American Hustle” director is teaming up with “Erin Brockovich” screenwriter Susannah Grant for an untitled “upstairs/downstairs soap set at a private country club.” The show will skip the pilot season altogether and just go straight to series with a thirteen episode order from ABC. Russell and Grant broke the show’s story together but actual scripting duties will fall to Grant. The show will presumably air next fall.

The Canyons Lindsay Lohan
With Hollywood set to unveil the Oscar nominations tomorrow morning—the same day as the Sundance Film Festival kicks off—the folks at the Razzies are doing their annual thing of thumbing their nose at the industry by unveiling their nominations of the year's worst. And big shock here is really how tame most of their targets are this year.

Will Smith
Way back in 2010, Will Smith had a decision to make: make "Men In Black 3" or the magical realist "The City That Sailed." And obviously, the franchise movie won out. But it seems "The City That Sailed" is still something Smith wants to make, although it now has a whole new creative team.

Will smith
Roland Emmerich may be preparing for the worst with two versions of “Independence Day 2” (one with Will Smith and one without) but at least one thing remains clear: the “After Earth” star hasn't grown sick yet of the sci-fi genre with a newly announced project on his plate., while elsewhere Tim Roth and Gérard Depardieu plan to delve into soccer's behind-the-scenes dealings and Michael K. Williams switches sides of the law.
