Tom At The Farm Xavier Dolan
After a trio of stylish, deeply emotional films in "I Killed My Mother," "Heartbeats" and the epic "Laurence Anyways," Xavier Dolan has somewhat shifted gears for his fourth feature "Tom At The Farm." The eye for visuals are still there it seems, but an eerier tone and colder atmosphere pervades this thriller, and the first trailer has arrived to provide a tantalizing look at the picture.

Tom At The Farm Xavier Dolan
When you think of Xavier Dolan, I assume you think, “Oh yeah, the guy who did the voice of Ron Weasley in the French dubs of the 'Harry Potter' films.” I know I do. But seriously, Dolan is also a director of some note, who at the age of 24 is about to release his fourth film, following on from the well-regarded pieces “I Killed My Mother,” “Heartbeats” and “Laurence Anyways.”

After a weighty first announcement for this year's TIFF earlier in the week, eyes turned across the Atlantic this morning to the reveal of the line-up for the 70th Venice Film Festival, which precedes Toronto by about a week. We already knew the festival was opening with Alfonso Cuaron's hotly-anticipated 3D space adventure "Gravity," and an educated guess at the line-up could be made from looking at which films among the TIFF announcement weren't world premieres, but the official roster was revealed at a press conference in Rome this morning, and it's once more, a doozy.

The constant criticism being aimed at young, wunderkind Canadian director Xavier Dolan, is that the Montreal-based filmmaker -- while completely precocious and preternaturally talented -- puts too much of a premium and emphasis on style over substance. And yet, just because it's practically a cliche ad hominem dig against Dolan's films, it doesn't mean that the censure is off base. While featuring an impeccable soundtrack, a color palette ripped out of the Pedro Almodovar playbook for comedic melodramas, and an ineffable je ne sais quoi energy taken from the Jean-Luc Godard school of '60s filmmaking (though Dolan denies he's ever seen the familiar feeling, "Two Or Three Things I Know About Her"), the 21-year-old director's sophomore directorial effort "Les Amours Imaginaires" ("Heartbeats") is decidedly hollow around the edges and lacks an emotional center to cling to.
