Love is both the simplest and most complex of human emotions. We fall into it so easily, and it can take us to dizzying, indescribable highs and if and when it ends, to bottomless lows, but the remarkable thing is that most of us are able to recover, and begin that search all over again. We look for that person who will, to borrow a movie cliché, complete us, but what happens if one day that perfect companion literally appears out of thin air? And what if that person has every quality you would want in a partner? That's the question at the heart of the whimsical "Ruby Sparks," the long awaited new film from "Little Miss Sunshine" directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, led by real life couple Paul Dano and Zoe Kazan, the latter of whom wrote the script.

Both whimsical and light on its feet, but also imbued with a mature sense of how relationships are very much sometimes about the power (or concession) of control, Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris' "Ruby Sparks" is a wonderful concotion, and a highlight of the summer movie season.

Good projects never really die, but sometimes it takes a bit of time for the right set of circumstances to come along to make them happen. Back in 2010, "The F Word" was gearing up with backing from Fox Searchlight, with "In Search Of A Midnight Kiss" director Alex Holdridge at the helm, Casey Affleck attached to star, and Rose Byrne, Rebecca Hall, Deborah Ann Woll and Mary Elizabeth Winstead all vying for the female lead. The project ultimately never came together, but it has found new life with two very able actors.

Alright, you've hopefully read our rave review -- we called it a "delightful romantic comedy that tugs at the heartstrings and rings of an instant classic" -- and another quick, very positive micro-tweet. So here's the thing that's becoming apparent to most of us: had our Best Films Of 2012 (So Far) feature ran just a few weeks later, "Ruby Sparks" would have almost certainly made the list.

The first time the indie-rockers Devotchka penned a score to a movie, they made a pretty big splash with the killer soundtrack to Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris' "Little Miss Sunshine" that they co-wrote with composer Mychael Danna ("Moneyball"). It's been often imitiated and certainly often-reused (just give a listen to "The Winner Is" below which has become a type of go-to score for indie-film trailers). Devotcka frontman Nick Urata composed most of 2009's "I Love You, Philip Morris" score by himself and he's done the same for his reteam with Dayton and Faris, "Ruby Sparks."

It’s been six long years since Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris’ narrative feature debut, the much beloved “Little Miss Sunshine.” But the directing duo is back with a new film, “Ruby Sparks,” and with it, prove that some things are worth the wait. With a script by its 28 year old star, Zoe Kazan, and co-starring her real life boyfriend Paul Dano, “Ruby Sparks” is a winning, charming yet bittersweet exploration of love and relationships, those that exist in both in reality and fantasy.

One of our most anticipated indie films hitting this summer sees the long-awaited return of "Little Miss Sunshine" directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, who haven't been seen since their Oscar-conquering 2006 Sundance hit. So what did it take to bring them back into the limelight? A teaming with indie-darling Zoe Kazan and her boyfriend Paul Dano on the whimisical-sounding, Charlie Kaufman-esque dramedy "Ruby Sparks."

Improbable, fantastical and romantic, "Ruby Sparks" is the belated follow-up to Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris' four-time Oscar-nominated debut, "Little Miss Sunshine." It's been six years since that film -- the duo has been stuck in multi-project development hell -- and they've returned with a story that's about a novelist struggling with writer's block who finds romance in a most unusual way: by creating a female character he thinks will love him, then actually, somehow, inexplicably willing her into existence.

Love will turn you upside down, inside out and take you the dizzying heights of rapture and the depths of despair. And somewhere all of those collide in the woozy and charming trailer for "Ruby Sparks," the latest from "Little Miss Sunshine" directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (and their first film since their breakout hit).

It's been six years since husband and wife filmmaking duo Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris directed their critical acclaimed indie dramedy "Little Miss Sunshine" which was nominated for four Oscars including Best Picture that year. Their Academy plaudits got them juice, but several projects they attached themselves to just couldn't come together.
