Here's a fun fact that escaped us in amidst the flurry of fall festival activity: Guillaume Canet's sprawling crime story saga "Blood Ties" premiered at the Cannes Film Festival running two hours and twenty-four minutes, but by the time it hit Toronto International Film Festival, it had been reduced somewhat significantly to two hours and seven minutes. We're not sure what exactly got trimmed or why, but it seems our observation in our review that "there is a different and possibly shorter edit of this movie that is probably much better" wasn't unique. And it seems that shorter cut is going into wide release...

Blood Ties
Well, it looks like David O. Russell's "American Hustle" is going to have a run for its money when it comes to sprawling '70s crime sagas that feature really silly hair and mustaches, as the new trailer has just dropped for Guillaume Canet's "Blood Ties," starring Clive Owen, Billy Crudup, Mila Kunis, Matthias Schoenaerts, Zoe Saldana, Marion Cotillard and James Caan. The film, which we were iffy about at Cannes, will be screening at the Toronto International Film Festival soon.

Out Of The Furnace Christian Bale Woody Harrelson
"RELEAAAAAASSSE MEEEEEEEEEEE," Eddie Vedder bellows all over this first trailer for Scott Cooper's "Out Of The Furnace," adding a pretty dense layer of fromage to what looks like a pretty gritty little drama. Let's hope it's just a case of good movie, not so hot trailer? We'll see, but let's dive in...

Out Of The Furnace Christian Bale Zoe Saldana
So, we guess this means we're getting closer to a trailer… Earlier this week, we got the first images from "Out Of The Furnace," the gritty drama from "Crazy Heart" director Scott Cooper featuring a great cast including Christian Bale, Casey Affleck, Woody Harrelson, Zoe Saldana, Sam Shepard and Willem Dafoe, and now a few more have arrived.

"It turned out great, it will not disappoint you. Whoo, it's powerful, it's great, It's not a joyful movie, but it's a very intense movie." Ok, so Woody Harrelson has already seen "Out Of The Furnace," and now we're doubly stoked for it. So wait, for those that may not know, what is it exactly? "Out Of The Furnace" is an upcoming American revenge thriller directed by Scott Cooper and it features an awesome cast that includes Christian Bale, Forest Whitaker, Woody Harrelson, Casey Affleck, Zoe Saldana, Sam Shepard and Willem Dafoe. Composer Dickon Hinchliffe ("Winter's Bone") is leading the score and Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder is writing an original tune for the movie. Clearly there's a lot of talent involved.

Cannes Review: Sprawling, Uneven Crime Saga 'Blood Ties' Falls Short Of Epic Scope

If there is any movie this year at Cannes that is absolutely brimming with promise on paper, it's Guillaume Canet's "Blood Ties." With an extended cast featuring Clive Owen, Billy Crudup, Mila Kunis, Matthias Schoenaerts, Zoe Saldana, James Caan, Marion Cotillard, Noah Emmerich and Lili Taylor among others along with a script co-written by James Gray, one wonders how it could go wrong. And while "Blood Ties" isn't a disaster, it's certainly a mess, a sprawling crime saga that endeavours to evoke the great character-driven movies of the 1970s, but never quite lives up to its epic scope.

Star Trek Into Darkness, JJ Abrams
Last week we asked about how you readers felt about movie trailers and whether or not they spoiled anything. One aspect we forgot to bring up was the existence of the EPK-style behind-the-scenes looks at movies that have arrived at a higher frequency during these past few years. Case in point, a seven-minute peek behind-the-scenes of the secretive “Star Trek Into Darkness” has landed online.

Star Trek: Into Darkness
Cast your mind back four years or so, to stardate early May 2009, and remember a time when J.J Abrams wasn't yet the anointed savior of Hollywood. He had an ever-growing fanbase, and had already been behind at least one bona-fide small screen pop culture phenomenon. But his influence on the big-screen up to that point only extended to a few screenwriting credits, mostly forgotten, a producing credit on disposable sleeper hit "Cloverfield," and directing "Mission: Impossible III," an enjoyable, but somewhat interchangeable entry to the Tom Cruise spy franchise.

Cannes you feel it? (Ha ha, groan). We're less than two weeks from red carpets being rolled out on the Croisette and with the lineup now firmed, all we can do is wait for the movies to arrive. And until that moment when the lights dim and the reels or digital bits unspool, these new images from Guillaume Canet's "Blood Ties" will hold it down.

Star Trek: Into Darkness
These days, it's all about the international dollars, so it's no surprise that some of this year's biggest blockbusters are getting a headstart overseas. "Iron Man 3" bowed a week before we get it on Friday, while "Star Trek Into Darkness" is also getting a jump abroad before the rest of us see it. While some early reviews from Australia dropped in about a week ago, 'Darkness' has now screened for folks in UK and a fresh batch of takes have arrived. The verdict? It's a rip-roaring blockbuster, that while not perfect (a common complaint is that characterization gets left behind as the adventure amps up) will be well worth your dollars. Here's what folks had to say:
