Adam McKay Says He Might Make A G-Rated 'Anchorman' Spin-Off About Ron Burgundy's Son & Dog

The Playlist By Charlie Schmidlin | The Playlist November 14, 2013 at 10:42AM

It's no secret that “Anchorman” represents an almost free-form comedic enterprise for director Adam McKay and Will Ferrell, able to shift and change form and purpose at will. Some are brilliant, like the alternate cut of the original, entitled “Wake Up Ron Burgundy”), some simply lackluster (the recent Dodge Durango tie-ins), but at least McKay and co. know their property. And as the sequel, “Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues” nears its release next month to hopefully calm our fears once and for all, McKay has recently revealed his next game-changing spin-off.

It's no secret that “Anchorman” represents an almost free-form comedic enterprise for director Adam McKay and Will Ferrell, able to shift and change form and purpose at will. And as the sequel, “Anchorman 2: The Legend Continuesnears its release next month to hopefully calm our fears once and for all, McKay has recently revealed his next game-changing spin-off.

In an interview with Collider (via AV Club), McKay confirmed somewhat accidentally that—on top of building another alternate cut of the sequel possibly even for theatrical release—he is planning another “Anchorman” installment that doesn't necessarily need Will Ferrell involved. “I guess it's out of the bag that Ron has a son? I mean, I guess it's kinda out of the bag that Ron has a son? Or did I just let it out of the bag?” asked McKay, before adding, “I just let it out of the bag. So we wanted to do the adventures of his son, Walter Burgundy, and Baxter. And I actually pitched it to Adam Goodman at Paramount and he said, 'That's not a bad idea.' So there's a chance we might be doing a 'Milo & Otis,' G-rated, PG, 'Adventures Of Walter And Baxter,' which would be amazing."

He added that he's always wanted to explore Baxter's adventures “when he's not around [Ron Burgundy and co.],” and an absurd family film featuring the pup and Burgundy's son is more than capable of fitting the bill. McKay also pointed to a possible “Anchorman 2.5,” which would be spliced into the film and recount one of Ron Burgundy's lost weekends while stuck in an elevator. He said that “it would take us two weeks to write that script, minimum,” but on top of the kids sequel, alternate cut, planned Broadway show, book and more it's probably best to just plan for “Anchorman 2” when it hits theaters on December 20th and take it slowly from there. Just don't forget to wear your official "Anchorman" Jockeys.
