'Boardwalk Empire' Season 4 Will Get The Talents Of 'The Wire' Writers Dennis Lehane & George Pelecanos

“Boardwalk Empire” is set to air its third season finale on Sunday, and very early on in the third season’s run it was announced that HBO had renewed the show for a fourth season. Showrunner Terrence Winter seems to have a very definite roadmap in terms of the story he wants to tell on the show, and to date the program has reliably delivered a new 12-episode season every September. It seems that trend will continue next year, and with all eyes creatively on season four, the show has recruited two new collaborators who have a pretty good track record.

Dennis Lehane and George Pelecanos are both veterans of “The Wire,” and the screenwriters/novelists will join "Boardwalk Empire" next season, with Pelecanos serving as an exec producer while Lehane is in line to pen at least one episode. Lehane is probably the better known of the duo thanks to penning the novels "Mystic River," "Shutter Island" and "Gone Baby Gone," and his most recent novel, "Live By Night," seems to have made him the perfect choice for HBO due to its 1920s Boston setting.

“My guess is that someone at HBO read 'Live By Night' and thought it would be a good fit,” Lehane told The Boston Herald (via CinemaBlend). “I’m a huge fan of the show so it worked out nicely.” He’ll actually serve as a creative consultant on the show, and together with Pelcanos will consult with Winter over the fourth season outline which he believes will have a lot of open storylines “once the bloodbath is over.” "Live By Night" is already proving to be a hugely successful endeavor for Lehane, with an adaptation of it currently being eyed by Ben Affleck as his follow-up to “Argo.”
