We’re in the awards equivalent of the eye of the storm right now: two Guild awards nomination announcements this week with a third to come, the Golden Globes on Sunday, and less than a week until we learn this year’s Oscar nominations. This morning brings another key announcement, with the reveal of the nominees for this year’s EE British Academy Film Awards, or the BAFTAs.

The British equivalent of the Oscars, the BAFTAs have become an increasingly important precursor to the Academy in recent years, thanks to a large overlap in membership and a strong British contingent voting in the U.S. — the winner of Best Film has lined up with Best Picture six out of the last seven years, and the nominees often indicate strengths or weaknesses within the industry.

And more twists in an exceptionally twisty awards-season narrative have arrived, with "Carol" and "Bridge Of Spies" leading the nominations with nine, and "The Revenant" close behind with eight. All three movies were Best Film nominees, along with "The Big Short" and "Spotlight." Big players missing from the category? "The Martian" and "Mad Max: Fury Road," suggesting that when it came to the big prize, voters leant prestige-y rather than blockbuster-y (though that said, "Fury Road" got seven nominations in total, and "The Martian" received nods for Ridley Scott and Matt Damon.)

Home players "Brooklyn" and "The Danish Girl" did well as expected, but couldn't crack Best Film, only making Best British Film, as did "45 Years," which saw Charlotte Rampling miss out, surprisingly (Maggie Smith for "Lady In The Van" did make it, a BAFTA nod which likely won't be repeated by the Academy). Otherwise, few surprises here, but the strength of "Carol" and "Bridge Of Spies" is certainly interesting. Will it be repeated by the Academy? We'll find out next week.
