'Casper, The Friendly Ghost' To Spook Movie Theaters Once Again?

Could Steve Guttenberg be on the verge of a comeback to the big screen? Only in dreams, however, Amblin and Universal apparently both have their eyes set on a new "Casper, the Friendly Ghost" feature film, the rights of which are now owned by Classic Media who hope to reboot the franchise.

As you might recall, everyone's favorite spirit was last seen in multiplexes in the 1995 blockbuster film starring Christina Ricci and Bill Pullman that grossed over $100 million domestically, toppled over $287 million worldwide and launched the career of director Brad Silberling, who later went on to helm the box office darlings "City of Angels" and "Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events."

However, don’t expect any hackneyed direct-to-video features. Instead, the studio has their minds made up that the relaunch will set its sail for the silver screen and as with every feature it seems nowadays, talk of 3D has already been knocked around. While any story has yet to hit the page, reports believe that the film may follow in the footsteps of the 2009 comic "Casper and the Spectrals," which brought new life to the famed apparition tale with hopes of wrangling in a whole new audience.

If you ask us, the studio would be smart to add a bit more edge to an already long expired idea. Though we must admit the original offering had its fair share of charm, and while redundant and pointless, still managed to scare up a rather large number of moviegoers. As with the first film and its straight to videos sequels that followed, expect a CG filmed live-action picture primed for a prepubescent crowd of modern day tweens. -- Aaron Fowler

If they do make another one, it should definitely be a continuation of the 1995 film. Both that and the spin off cartoons which followed were successful. I've never read the new comic, but if it's anything like the 'Casper's Scare School' cartoons, then I don't want to. That was terrible. I say bring back the original Casper; back from when everything wasn't sensored and movie makers weren't afraid to make films like that.

I liked the earlier movies with Casper, Wendy the witch, the Ghostly Trio, and Spooky with his girlfriend Pearl (or "Poil," as Spooky calls her). If they do another Casper movie I'd like to see them incorporate another Harveytoons character, namely find a way to fit Hot Stuff the Tuff Little Devil into the plot.

    Runcible is a complete idiot!

A new Casper (like the first one) is a awesome idea!!! WE NEED ANOTHER ONE! The Ghostly Trio- best characters - (besides Casper of course) I LOVED the first movie -unlike SOME (Runcible).

Mr. Semag said: "The first movie was terrible enough. We don’t need another one."

Aw come on. Isn't it great that for once, Hollywood wants to remake a BAD movie, instead of a good one? Maybe this new Casper film will be better. I have similar hopes for del Toro's remake of "The Haunted Mansion".

Casper and the Spectrals was a pretty good comic. It did a great job re-inventing Hot Stuff, the devil child. But the story was a bit derivative, and Wendy's re-design looked awful. I hope Spielberg and Co. use the original Harvey comic-book Wendy (with perhaps a bit more spiff) for any movie.

One thing I hope he DOESN'T do is use the Ghostly Trio too much. They damn near ruined the 1995 movie - too freaking obnoxious and not funny. Oh, and one more thing...Spielberg should make the ghosts original entities, not the spirits of the dead. That was a real downer in the 1995 film.

The first movie was terrible enough. We don't need another one.
