Believe it or not, you're actually going to have more than one option this week when it comes to movies taking on the hunt for and killing of Osama Bin Laden. Yes, there's Kathryn Bigelow's awards season favorite, "Zero Dark Thirty," going into wide release on Friday. But hitting DVD and Blu-ray yesterday was The Weinstein Company's much lower budget "Seal Team Six: The Raid On Osama Bin Laden."

In the week we've had of 2013 so far, we've cast an extensive eye over the films to look forward to over the next 12 months; the indies, the blockbusters, and the ones we're just plain looking forward to. But of course, it's fairly easy for us to forget that some of the films that you guys are looking forward to the most are ones that we caught at various festivals in 2012.

Last week, we took a look at a cool hundred movies on the way over the next twelve months that we're looking forward to, and while some may disappoint, others will surprise and surpass expectations. One of the great pleasures of being a cinema fan is that of discovery; that unknown film that you take a chance on, that blows you away and becomes one of the talking points of the year. Invariably, these discoveries end up coming from the independent and foreign world, and prove to be among the best moments of the cinematic year.

Step into my limousine and let’s drive around in the dead of night trying to find the corpses of 2012’s best films, shall we? Our journey will take us to the cornfields of Kansas, to tiny New England islands and to an explosion in a restaurant in Tel Aviv. We will talk to murderers and movie directors, we will celebrate friendship in Barcelona and suffer despair in the Phillippine jungle; we will get punched in the supermarket and mourn Phil Coulson. And then, just as we are sipping Fernet Branca in an Italian café, mercifully the apocalypse will arrive from below and that will be that.

Cinema. Our cathedral in the dark for watching the lives of others flashing on a screen in hopes of a resonant echo, self-recognition, escape, catharsis, trying to make sense of this crazy world. One sometimes has to question the beings who would rather spend their time with fictional people in an unreal story instead of the real flesh and blood thing. But in the dark, sometimes, together we transcend our stations, and for a fleeting two hours, if we’re lucky, can be transported to a place that’s moving, poignant, and maybe even magical.

Over the last few days, we've been pin-pointing 100 of the films we're most looking forward to over the next twelve months. Of course, they won't all be great -- and some will be terrible -- but they all give some reason for hope, to one degree or another.

So here we are in 2013. We survived the Mayan apocalypse, and we've made it to the year in which both Kevin Costner's disaster epic "The Postman" and sub-standard John Carpenter sequel "Escape To L.A." were set. And after a strong 2012, which contained some of the most anticipated movies in recent memory, from blockbusters like "Prometheus," "The Avengers," and "The Dark Knight Rises" to new films from Paul Thomas Anderson, Quentin Tarantino and Kathryn Bigelow, among many others, you might imagine that 2013 would be something of a step down.

2012 was all about escape. Not only in terms of the big-budget movies that offered us escape from the increasingly ugly real world (how many superheroes or swoony vampires can we stomach?), but by the content of the more adult movies. Characters wanted an escape – from slavery, from a futuristic Korea, from time-travel gangsters, from a burdensome lover – and in these stories we were afforded tremendous freedom. They transported us, for sure, while reminding us of the very real hardships 2012 afforded us all. Below are my very favorite movies of the year, all of which I will be escaping to, again and again, for years to come.

So far....Ok, first off, sorry to disappoint you if you thought this was going to be one big master list from all of our contributors. One thing is clear: getting a consensus out of the entire The Playlist is impossible and man, even if we put it to a vote (which we've done in the past), the results are generally dissatisfying and as you know, consensus tends to get a little dull. So instead, this will be our one-stop shopping for all our Best of 2012 year-end lists (and all our Best of 2012 content). So far we have four fairly distinctly different top 10 lists and they're only going to get more and more different from these two (at least we suspect as much). Here's the top 10s we have so far. Bookmark this page for more lists that will be added soon. Happy New Year and thanks for reading in 2012.
