This year marks the 50th anniversary of the James Bond franchise, the longest-running and arguably most successful (although Harry Potter might have pipped in in total gross in recent years) film series of all time. So it's appropriate that Ian Fleming's character, currently played by Daniel Craig, is returning to the screen for the first time in four years, after being mired in MGM's financial difficulties for some time.

After a very long wait, we finally got the trailer for John Hillcoat's "Lawless" a couple of days ago, and while it was a bit more conventional that we were expecting, it should be remembered that trailers for Hillcoat's films have never done them justice in the slightest, and with the cast he's got lined up here, there's a strong reason why this remains very high on our Must See List for 2012.

Rumors of their involvement have been circulating for the last week or so, and it looks like things are now set in place with Paramount honcho Adam Goodman confirming the addition of Jennifer Connelly and Saoirse Ronan to Darren Aronofsky's "Noah" for what he describes as a "perfect combination of casting."

We already know that Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained" is going to be something special. Centering on slavery and vengeance, but delivering through the conventions of a spaghetti western in a way that only Tarantino knows how, there are few films this year taking as big a risk. And if these first official images from the film indicate anything, it's that the pay off could be something truly memorable.

Lars Von Trier has never been short on balls. His career has been filled with films that have found the director walking right into a hornets nest of thorny issues, whether it's slavery ("Manderlay"), the American empire ("Dogville"), feminism (sorta) ("Antichrist"), depression ("Melancholia"), faith ("Breaking The Waves") or just plain ol' "spazzing" ("The Idiots"), and so doing a movie about sex seems like the logical next step. But of course, his appraoch is never as simple as those reductive summaries suggest, and the resulting works are always controversial, exasperating, overreaching, brilliant and fascinating -- often all at once. And once again, Lars Von Trier is stepping beyond expectations.

Rising Brit actress Andrea Riseborough spent most 2011 out of the multiplex and in the arthouse, with a number of pics unspooling at festivals including Madonna's "W.E.," James Marsh's espionage tale "Shadow Dancer," and the alternate history WWII tale "Resistance." Big things are on the horizon with roles in a handful of promising efforts including the James McAvoy led action flick "Welcome To The Punch" and Tom Cruise's sci-fi number "Oblivion," and now she's knocking "horror movie" off her to-do list.

This Friday, "Pirates! Band of Misfits" opens, the latest whirligig stop motion contraption by the cracked geniuses at Aardman Animation, the studio that, over the years, has brought us such astounding wonders as "Wallace and Gromit in the Curse of the Were-Rabbit," "Chicken Run," "Arthur Christmas," and the underrated "Flushed Away." 'Pirates' is their second film in conjunction with Sony Pictures Animation, their new home after leaving a partnership with DreamWorks Animation ("The Croods," Chris Sanders' next movie for DreamWorks, was an idea originally developed by Aardman but retained by DreamWorks Animation after the split). We got a chance to talk with Peter Lord, director of "Pirates! Band of Misfits" and the co-founder of the studio (he's a kind of cuddly British John Lasseter proxy), about what drew him to this pirate world, what's next for stop motion animation, the split from DreamWorks, and his new Batman short films.

Is there any leading man as non-essential and bland as Josh Duhamel? Say what you will about the Nicholas Sparks adaptations, but so far they've (for the most part) gone with men who at least have some appeal to some spectrum of the female population that drives these things. Ryan Gosling, Channing Tatum, Zac Efron, Liam Hemsworth and even oldies like Kevin Costner and Richard Gere were decent enough choices for their respective films. But who even says, "That Josh Duhamel is soooo cute. Can't wait to see his next movie!"
