It's a little known fact, but in the mid 1980s, in a bid to fight underemployment in certain aspects of the entertainment industry, the British government passed the Broadbent Act, which set up a quota that one in four British movies would have to cast British character actor favorite Jim Broadbent, while providing tax cuts to any Hollywood movies that employed him. Sometimes, this has led to some overlap, such as last year, when Broadbent accidentally gave the exact same performance in "The Iron Lady" as he did a decade ago in "Iris."

Back in 2006 Reese Witherspoon produced her first feature film, “Penelope.” That Christina Ricci comedy about a girl cursed with a pig snout and ears skewed young and featured Witherspoon herself in a supporting role. It took her a while to dip her toe in the producing waters again, but after setting up production house, Pacific Standard, she looks set to do it all again.

Then Why Is it Called 'Battleship'? Peter Berg Says The Movie Has "No Direct Correlation" With The Game

At this stage, it seems that rather than providing it the safety of an established brand name to lean on, the connection to Hasbro’s “Battleship” game is proving to be more of a hindrance than a help to Peter Berg’s upcoming blockbuster. While a film about "Transformers"-esque aliens attacking Earth with warships being our first and last line of defence may seem faintly ridiculous anyway, add into that equation that it’s based on a board game and audiences may be forgiven for writing it off as a load of old tosh before it makes it anywhere near theatres.

Late in 2010, seemingly on the back of David O. Russell's "The Fighter" and all its success, Gael Garcia Bernal and Al Pacino boarded "Hands Of Stone," a biopic of legendary Panamanian boxer Robert Duran which had Venezuelan helmer Jonathan Jakubowicz set to direct. One of Duran's most famous fights was of course against the undefeated Sugar Ray Leonard and, with the film seemingly growing legs recently, an unconventional choice has now been cast to play Leonard.

Well, it's not quite "John Carter," but today MGM revealed in a call with investors (via Deadline) that though "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" took in $231 million worldwide (not bad for a hard-R crime drama that runs 2 1/2 hours long) it still didn't meet the numbers honchos thought they would get out of a fanbase that snapped up 18 million copies of the book. “...it is below our expectations and we booked a modest loss,” exec Gary Barber said, adding that they ”were hoping we’d do 10% more than we did.” But what does this mean about the proposed sequels?

Paramount's "G.I. Joe" franchise is a bit like the Canadian rock band Nickelback: no one admits to liking them, not one person we know listens to or enjoys them, but clearly someone is buying their pedestrian CDs and attending their concerts in droves. And like the band's poor reception from anyone resembling critics yet still just doing fine thank you, despite being thrown together before the late 2008/2009 writer's strike, and generally receiving poor reviews (34% RT score, 32 Metacritic score, even a 5.6 out of 10 from the perpetually forgiving, easy-to-please and populist IMDB crowd), "G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra" went on to gross $302 million worldwide (thanks, international market).
