Here's the thing. As cheaply made and tossed off as these "Paranormal Activity" movies are, they make money. A lot of money. After the series took a slight dip with "Paranormal Activity 2," it returned strong with "Paranormal Activity 3" which took over $200 million worldwide. Now, the directors of that massively successful third installment -- "Catfish" helmers Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman -- are back with "Paranormal Activity 4," and it's clear they're not going to rock the boat too much.

A match made in heaven? One could say filmmaker Richard Kelly has been leading up to this moment for a long time. The "Donnie Darko" director is teaming up with Nicolas Cage for a true-crime thriller called "Amicus" that he will not not only helm, but write and produce as well alongside Laura Bickford ("Traffic," "Che") and Cage's agent Mike Nilon.  According to Variety, the picture will be Kelly's next feature and Cage will play Rodney A. Smolla, an award-winning author and one of the most influential First Amendment scholars of the past two decades. A January start date is being eyed.

If the formula works, why break it? Jason Bateman has had a career resurgence playing the exasperated straight man starting with "Arrested Development" and taking that persona through a number films, while Melissa McCarthy has used her physique and personality to portray women who go right over the top. So what do you get when you put them both in a movie? "Identity Thief."

So far, with Christoph Waltz and Melanie Thierry on board for Terry Gilliam's "The Zero Theorem," things are already looking promising for the picture, and even the rumored names are exciting, with Tilda Swinton recently mentioned (but not confirmed) as one of the participants in the picture. But another actor has come on board, raising the stakes just a bit higher.

Such is the world we live in, where Len Wiseman gets hired to direct a reboot of "The Mummy," yet Henry Selick can't get a movie made at a studio. And while there was a brief ray of light for Selick's "Shadow King" (aka "Shademaker" ) after Disney scrapped it last month, with Laika taking a look at the movie, it now seems that the project is dead.

As far as directorial debuts go, one couldn't have a much bigger start than Disney's "Maleficent" starring Angelina Jolie. But helmer Robert Stromberg isn't a complete neophyte to special effects or film sets. The three-time Oscar nominee, won twice, back-to-back, for Art Direction on "Avatar" and "Alice In Wonderland," and his CV boasts movies as wide ranging as "The Hunger Games," "There Will Be Blood" and "The Fast And The Furious: Tokyo Drift." Despite the fact that taking the reins of a major tentpole is a big deal, Stromberg is confidently striding ahead, and he's got another big project on the horizon.

Even though "The Hangover III" is in the midst of production, Todd Phillips is already looking beyond the final chapter of the fratboy comedy franchise, and has been lining up various projects as potential directorial vehicles. Over the past year, his name has become attached to the stoner weapons dealer pic "Arms And The Dudes"; the drug tale "Mule" penned by the Duplass Brothers and just last month he took over "The Gambler" remake from Martin Scorsese. And now he's adding another to the development pile, and it's arguably the most intriguing of the lot.

While Woody Allen tends to not think much of his own output, he's more than happy to recognize talent among his colleagues, and it may surprise some to know that Martin Scorsese's "GoodFellas" is one that he considers to be a "great American movie."
