Ewan McGregor is one of our favorite actors, and his choices usually tend to be a bit off the beaten path, and undeniably interesting. However, the thriller or action genre isn't one he's dipped his toes into too often. Oh sure, there's "Haywire" but he was mostly on the phone in that one, and Michael Bay's "The Island" didn't quite work (and the less said about the "Star Wars" prequels, the better, though they likely ensure a pretty nice annual check). All that aside, it looks like he'll be picking up the guns again for a movie where he'll portray public enemy number one.

The last year to year and a half or so have been very good to Ben Whishaw. The rising British actor features in two of this fall's biggest films -- The Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer's "Cloud Atlas" and that latest 007 flick "Skyfall" -- and Steven Spielberg wants the actor for his next blockbuster, "Robopocalypse." Before he gets to that though, Whishaw will making a quick pit stop to the set of a film by another acclaimed director.

We're not sure if we'd go far as to describe it as 'troubled,' but "Gangster Squad" certainly hasn't had the best luck. The period actioner, directed by "Zombieland" helmer Ruben Fleischer, was one of Warner Bros' great hopes for 2012, with an A-list cast assembled including Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Josh Brolin and Sean Penn. But after the Aurora shootings in July, the studio made the decision to pull advertising for the movie, delay the release from September until January, and reshoot the ending (which was originally a gunfight in a movie theater).

Get Oscar ready? We'll see, but any thoughts that this was going to be mostly just a bunch of guys in rooms looking at charts and maps is dead wrong. The brand new and meaty trailer for "Zero Dark Thirty" has landed, and it's pretty captivating stuff.

"My guess is honestly, [it'll be] the movie after next. I'll probably find something that's in better shape to do next until we got that one ready, and then we'll go ahead and fire that one up," Ben Affleck told us just a couple of nights ago, when we asked him about his brewing Whitey Bulger biopic. And he may have found that project.

It seems Jennifer Connelly has been out of the spotlight a bit for the last few years, mostly thanks to a string of movies -- "Creation," "Virginia," "The Dilemma," "Salvation Boulevard" -- that just did nothing for her. But she seems to be on the rebound. Of course, she booked a ticket on board Darren Aronofsky's "Noah" and now she's set to reunite with the writer of one of her career highlights, "A Beautiful Mind."

A legend, a hipster multi-hyphenate, and a rising star and filmmaker all coming together? Could be something special or...something else, but "Terri" director Azazel Jacobs is certainly raising the bar for his next effort.

It's only a matter of time before the talented and (very) lovely "True Blood" star Deborah Ann Woll begins to break out beyond the now silly HBO show (not that it was Shakespeare to begin with -- but how many more subplots can it add?). This summer she had a very nice minor, but important turn in the excellent, but unfortunately ignored "Ruby Sparks" and in case you forgot, she was in early talks for Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master" for the role of Elizabeth before the movie was dumped by Universal, in its first incarnation. But after a number of indies that did her talents no favors ("Catch .44," the recently released "Someday This Pain Will Be Useful To You") she's now landed a role opposite Zac Efron that will hopefully boost her profile.

Jodie Foster tends to take a measured approach when deciding on her roles in front of and behind the camera, which tends to make her choices pretty interesting. And that's no less true for what is gearing up to be her next feature effort.
