One Movie Bryan Cranston Won't Be In: Alexander Payne's 'Nebraska'

As you know, we love Bryan Cranston, but even he's gotta sleep sometime. The hard-working actor has already appeared in two movies so far in 2012 ("Red Tails," "John Carter") and has five more on the way to theaters ("Detachment," "Rock Of Ages," "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted," "Total Recall" and "Argo"). There is no doubt that Cranston is in demand, but while we would've loved to see him work with Alexander Payne, alas, it is not to be.

"Sin City" roared onto screens back in 2005, and ever since then, sequel talk has moved in fits and starts with very little happening. But 2011 saw the most movement in a while, with William Monahan being hired on to finish the script, and Frank Miller teasing that Jessica Alba's character of Nancy Callahan would have a storyline that would thread the two movies together. That start date has remained always shifting or forever elusive, though now, Robert Rodriguez says it might just happen this year.

Sorry haters, Lena Dunham has arrived and there's not much you can do stop her. The budding writer/director/actress broke out with "Tiny Furniture" and earned the wrath from dorky The Criterion Collection purists who were galled when the label dared to select her film. But credit to Dunham, who has just soldiered on ignoring the backlash. She went on and teamed up with super producer Judd Apatow, and the result is the upcoming HBO series "Girls," the first three episodes of which completely won over SXSW crowds (we called it "beautiful and brilliant"). So while you wait until April 15th for the show to arrive, you can take a quick trip back in time to see the early work that helped Dunham find her voice.

If we had to pick one grossly underrated film from 2011, definitely high up on our collective list would be Jason Reitman's "Young Adult." And if we had to pick one criminally undervalued performance from 2011 that deserved to score an Oscar nomination but didn't, Charlize Theron's dark, raw and funny turn in this brilliant and bittersweet picture would be right up there as well. So two pretty strong reasons why you should catch up on this film if you missed it earlier in the year, not to mention we described it in our review as "unflinchingly funny and painful" and gave it an A-grade to boot.

The world is an oyster these days for Michael Fassbender, who surely has his pick of projects. Even though the hotly buzzed actor was snubbed for his towering performance in "Shame," that hasn't stopped Hollywood from sending the actor everything they've got. He's lining up a busy year of projects, with Ridley Scott's "The Counselor" to shoot this spring, and he will reteam with Steve McQueen for "Twelve Years A Slave" this summer. And his next effort is yet again another nice, unexpected selection for the actor.
