Awards ceremonies...it's easy to lose track of them all at this time of year, isn't it. We had the BAFTAs this weekend, and the music industry also celebrated their biggest bash with the Grammys taking place on Sunday, but there's another important award that has been handed out that shouldn't be ignored before we shift our focus to the Oscars shortly.

While audiences may not have flocked to it (their loss), Gina Carano proved in "Haywire" that she could be a compelling on-screen presence and one helluva of an action leading lady, a nice place to be, particularly when the industry has so few women in that role. And while we're unlikely to get any further adventures involving Mallory Kane, Carano has been recruited to crack some more skulls.

Andy Serkis may be best known for his work in blue spandex suits with ping pong balls taped to him ("Lord of the Rings," King Kong," "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," "The Adventures of Tintin") but it's becoming increasingly clear that he's a man of many talents. Not only had there been calls for Serkis to be rewarded during the awards season for his work as Ceasar in Rupert Wyatt's 'Apes' film - something that this writer would have endorsed - but he's also impressed in non-mo-cap roles. His portrayal of Ian Dury in "Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll," even earned him a BAFTA nomination last year.

Put another one up on the board for Michael Mann. Barely 24 hours after it was revealed that he added the cop thriller "The Big Stone Grid" to his plate, it seems the director has another project that he's also taking a look at, while giving a slight update on one we haven't heard about in a while.

So yesterday brought forth the first teaser trailer for "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter," a pretty decent spot highlighted on mood, some sexy gothic scenery and some hints of spectcular setpieces. Well, Bleeding Cool has uncovered a slightly longer spot from the Phillipines that has a bit more footage and some dialogue...and we can see why it was ditched for the U.S. spot.

You can keep your Dark Knights and your Prometheuses because there's nothing we're looking forward to in the coming year more than "Cogan's Trade," the long-awaited third film from Australian helmer Andrew Dominik. The director showed an inordinate amount of promise with his debut, "Chopper," which helped bring Eric Bana to the world's attention, but few thought he'd follow it with a masterpiece on the level of "The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford," to this writer's mind one of the two or three best American movies of the 21st century so far.

After a slight blip in form with "Broken Embraces" (which, don't get us wrong, is strong, but perhaps not up to his usual quality), Pedro Almodovar returned in a big way last year with "The Skin I Live In," a nasty, puzzling little thriller that was one of the director's most satisfying works, with excellent performances from Antonio Banderas and Elena Ayana, among others. The director just picked up the BAFTA for Best Film Not In The English Language this past weekend, but as ever, he's not hanging around, with a new project already gearing up to shoot soon.

Joining a handful of filmmakers making their return last year including Lynne Ramsay, Cameron Crowe and Alexander Payne, Whit Stillman showed he still had the goods when he unveiled "Damsels In Distress" at the Venice and Toronto film festivals last year. Filled with this trademark patter, distinct style and a tone and mood that all his his own, the film isn't for everyone, but for those willing to go along for the ride, it's worth the watch.

Right now, it's slightly under four years since we last saw a Guillermo Del Toro-directed movie in theaters. By the time his next film, the massive-scale monster movie "Pacific Rim," hits theaters, it'll be close to five. Of course, it barely feels like he's been away: last year's "Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark" had his name all over it, while he nearly helmed "The Hobbit" before Peter Jackson took the reins back, and will maintain a writing credit on the film, while his consulting work at DreamWorks Animation, and busy media presence has kept him in the headlines all this time.
