Deep fried, dangerous, obscene, hilarious and hugely entertaining, while not for the faint of heart, William Friedkin's "Killer Joe" proves the director hasn't lost the energetic spirit that put him on the map in the 1970s with films like "The French Connection" and "The Exorcist." And indeed, it might be his most controversial film since that latter pic. The film's violence and nudity might have made some folks at the MPAA squirm, but it was undoubtedly a climatic sequence involving fried chicken that pushed them over the edge.

While the decision is yet to come down on whether or Warner Bros. and Peter Jackson will embark on additional shooting to create "The Hobbit: Cashing In" aka a third movie in the upcoming series of the films (we hope the director reads our open letter), they haven't kept their eyes off the prize in marketing the first movie, "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey."

Well, it didn’t take Warner Bros. long to finally make a decision on “Gangster Squad.” After the tragedy that occurred in Aurora, Colorado -- which happened a week ago tonight -- Warner Bros. went into crisis mode figuring out how to handle the Ruben Fleischer-directed film, which in its climax features a scene of gangsters shooting through a movie screen at the audience. After first yanking the trailer from in front of the prints of “The Dark Knight Rises,” word started flying about possible reshoots and delaying the release to early January.

It has been a whirlwind 48 hours for "Cloud Atlas." After something of wild goose chase (see above), the Venice line-up was announced this morning on the festival's official site, and although somewhat given away by the TIFF announcement a few days back, the big ticket is "To The Wonder," the second film in two years from anti-prolific auteur Terrence Malick. The film stars Ben Affleck, Olga Kurylenko, Javier Bardem, Barry Pepper, Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams, and the latter also features in another big premiere, starring alongside Noomi Rapace in Brian DePalma's latest, "Passion." The U.S. line-up is also completed by Ramin Bahrani's "At Any Price," with Zac Efron and Dennis Quaid, and in a surprise move, Harmony Korine's "Spring Breakers," with James Franco, Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez.

Published in 1970, optioned by Paul Newman and then attempted by Robert Redford in the mid-1990s, with more filmmakers to follow, getting "The Body Snatchers" writer Jack Finney's novel "Time And Again" up on the big screen has been a decades spanning effort worthy of the book's premise. But Doug Liman is going to give it a shot.
