The 56th BFI London Film Festival kicks off October 10th and runs through October 21st. Like any good festival, this means a panoply of new marketing materials, in this case in the form of pictures. First up is a new pic from "Wish You Were Here" featuring Aussie stars Joel Edgerton and Teresa Palmer. Directed by Edgerton's fellow Blue Tongue Films cohort Kieran Darcy-Smith, the film, which debuted at Sundance earlier this year, also co-stars Felicity Price and Antony Starr.

For the five of you that are going to wonder.... No, this is not remake of Cate Shortland's recent post-WWII drama, but instead is Warner Bros. upcoming graphic novel adaptation that has Dwayne Johnson attached to star. And now, it's locking down a director.

While the rest of Hollywood spends the next few months jockeying their awards season horses, Universal doesn't have have to worry about that with "The Man With The Iron Fists." It's a kung fu flick, so done and done right? Well, as folks who have been following the RZA directed movie know by now, it's tossing in a few more factors that will make it a bit more than your average chop-socky actioner.

You may have forgotten, given the brouhaha of Danny Boyle's celebrated London Olympics opening ceremony thingy, that he actually has a new movie on the way. "Trance" started filming last September, with the plan to start editing once the director's duties with the mega sporting event were over. Well, that time has arrived and today brings with it some new/old snaps from the movie. Yes, they landed last fall, but here they are as a reminder of what's in store.

There are few movies coming this fall that are as ambitious as The Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer's "Cloud Atlas." Featuring an all-star cast in multiple roles, in a story set across numerous time periods, touching a half-dozen different genres all amidst a sprawling narrative, few films are going as far out on the ledge as this one. And it's getting even bigger.

Is director Sally Potter finally having her moment? While "Orlando" put her on the arthouse map in 1992, the ensuing years haven't been easy -- Cate Blanchett, Johnny Depp, Christina Ricci and Focus Features could not help "The Man Who Cried" earn more than $1.7 million globally in 2000, and 2004's "Yes" was killed by a scathing review in Variety even though audiences at the festival adored it. That has still made Potter gunshy about festivals, Telluride in particular, where "Yes" was brutalized.

But among all the buzzworthy titles reaching for Oscar gold, there are plenty more films just looking to find an audience. And while they may not boast big names and budgets, they may offer up something unexpected for the adventurous viewer, and one movie hoping to make a splash is Wei Ling Chang's debut feature "The Unlikely Girl."

"I guarantee, if you’re a Smurf fan and you see this movie, you’ll see the Smurfs that you grew up with and you’ll see The Smurfs movie that you want," "The Smurfs" auteur Raja Gosnell ("Big Momma's House," "Scooby-Doo," "Beverly Hills Chihuahua") said on the eve of the hybrid live-action/CGI feature's release last year. And while that remains to be seen, since no one we know actually saw "The Smurfs," clearly it was the Smurfs movie for many audiences, as the picture went on to gross a whopping $563 million worldwide. Clearly nostalgia aimed at parents -- with kids that will like the picture regardless of whether they grew up with it or not -- should never be underestimated.

Right now, The Playlist team is at a divide with "The Guilt Trip." Half of us think it will be a movie to avoid this upcoming holiday season, while the other half see lots of comic potential in the pairing of Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen. And at least for this writer, this first clip places me in the latter camp.

It seems what Wes Anderson wants, Wes Anderson gets. Earlier this summer, with "Moonrise Kingdom" doing solid business in theaters, the writer/director started putting the pieces together for his next film, "The Grand Budapest Hotel," eyeing Johnny Deep, Jude Law and Angela Lansbury as potential players alongside his usual roster of actors such as Bill Murray, who recently confirmed he'll be taking part. Depp and Law are both on board, and another wish is coming true for Anderson.
