HBO might be turning into something of a safe haven for the kind of smart, adult programming that's increasingly rare in theaters, but not everything gets to make the cut. With shows like "True Blood" and "Game Of Thrones" becoming long-running hits, and newcomers like "Girls" and "The Newsroom" getting second season pickups, there's only so much room on the schedule, and it means that even high-profile shows aren't necessarily getting the go-ahead.

After delving into the world of erotic gay cinema with his film school short adaptation of Anthony Hecht's "Feast Of Stephen," which portrayed one man's viewing of a pick-up basketball game in New York, all around multi-hyphenate James Franco has now set up a teaming with filmmaker Travis Mathews (who wrote/produced/directed "I Want Your Love") for what's being described as a "homo-sex-art-film" that's sure raise a few eyebrows.

Of all the long-developing music biopics out there in the world, a movie about Janis Joplin nearly tops the list of much dicussed, but unmade projects. Before Fernando Meirelles made "360," he was linked to a version that would've starred Amy Adams and been produced by Wyck Godfrey of "Twilight" fame. And over the years, names ranging from Pink to Zooey Deschanel to Renee Zellweger have all cropped up to play the iconic singer, without much happening. But it looks like all the pieces are in place for what could be a very unique pairing.

When we reported on the batch of new names joining "The Wolverine" earlier today, we speculated that was just the tip of the iceberg particulary with the film starting to shoot soon, but we didn't expect to see more news arriving so quickly, especially for such a big part. But indeed, the villain has been cast, and no, it's not a name that you're likely familiar with.

Even though Christopher Nolan -- advocate for film stock over digital and IMAX over 3D -- can present his own movies however he wants, even if Warner Bros. would've love some extra three dimension coin from "The Dark Knight Rises," that power doesn't seem to extend to movies he executive produces. As the campaign for "The Dark Knight Rises" ends you can bet that marketing for Zack Snyder's "Man Of Steel" (which Nolan is executive producing) will start ramping up in a big way (it's pretty much a no brainer that a teaser will be attached to TDKR), and one of the first bits of info is the movie is going to be put through the conversion machine.

"Moonrise Kingdom" not only earned Wes Anderson some of the best reviews in years, but has also done extremely well in limited release, where it's pulled in $37 million worldwide thus far and has been cracking the top ten domestically, even though it's in less than 900 theaters. And it seems he's very eager to get back behind the cameras.

Oh yeah, "The Wolverine." We sorta forgot about this movie for a brief moment, but with a summer release slated for next year, and with filming slated to get underway in August, we suppose the wheels are going to start turning on this very soon in a big way, and a bunch of new cast members have come on board.

Having worked together on Paul Feig's sophomore directorial feature "Unaccompanied Minors," as well as on episodes of "Arrested Development," it seems Tony Hale has formed a pretty friendship with the director, and is now joining Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy in the buddy cop comedy "The Heat." While details on the plot are still unknown -- and likely a bit in flux as Katie Dippold’s script is now getting a rewrite courtesy of Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky (“Bad Teacher,” “The Office,” “Year One”) -- if you add up McCarthy + Bullock + cop comedy, it should speak for itself. As for Hale, he'll be playing a man arrested for soliciting a prostitute. "The Heat" is slated to hit theaters on April 5, 2013.

It was perhaps inevitable that Stuart Murdoch of Belle & Sebastian was going to move into filmmaking. For anyone who has followed the band over the years, you know that each album has usually arrived with an extensive story build around it, with appropriately theatrical artwork to go with it. Well, following a Kickstarter campaign and with the support of "Rushmore" producer Barry Mendel, the pieces all came together this spring for "God Help The Girl" with Elle Fanning and Brit actor Olly Alexander nabbing roles, but it looks like with production set to get underway, some changes have been made.
