Clint Mansell Scoring Adaptation Of Irvine Welsh's 'Filth' Starring James McAvoy

Musician and composer Clint Mansell doesn't crank out film scores, but when he does, it's always worth paying attention. Even when it's for otherwise forgettable fare like "Faster" or unjustly ignored dramas like "Last Night" (one of the key pieces of which is being used in the trailers for Steven Soderbergh's "Side Effects"), it's worth tracking down. Distinctive and unique, while he may be best known for his work on Darren Aronofsky's films, his discography speaks for itself. And it looks 2013 is going to find us being treated to health dose of Mansell.

This spring he tunes up Park Chan-wook's "Stoker," and now Film Music Reporter reveals that he's also slated to score "Filth." Nice. An adaptation of Irvine Welsh's novel, the lurid and darkly funny story stars James McAvoy as Bruce Robertson, a sex-obsessed, cocaine-addicted, bigoted Scottish police officer who is supposed to be investigating a murder but gets sidetracked by his own peculiarities, worries and hangups ranging from the pranks he pulls on his co-workers to his various sexual conquests. We're kind of curious to see how Mansell's generally pulsating, minamalist style fits into the equation, but he usually meets these kinds of challenges head on and comes up with compelling results.

Jim Broadbent, Eddie Marsan, Jamie Bell, Imogen Poots and more co-star in the Jon S. Baird film. There's no release date or distributor for "Filth," but we'd expect it to show up somewhere on the festival circuit this year.
