David Lynch Working On A New, "Typically Dark" Script

While there was a period of time when David Lynch was a cinematic workhorse -- "Lost Highway," "The Straight Story" and "Mulholland Drive" were all released between 1997 and 2001, to give you an idea -- but he's since diversified his creative output. 2006 was the last time we saw a feature from the director with "Inland Empire," and since he's taken on a variety of ventures including fashion house helmer, concert webcaster, aspiring artist and "Louis" guest star. While he's been continually asked about his next movie, Lynch has generally deflected by saying he's waiting for the right inspiration to strike. But could he already have something brewing?

The New York Times Magazine recently profiled Lynch, and more specifically his increasing work on transcendental meditation, but talk still turned toward the movies. Bob Roth, one of the leaders of the organization started by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, let it slip that Lynch "was working on a new script and that it was typically dark." It appears to be a bit of info that the director didn't necessarily want getting out there.

“Bobby’s got a big mouth,” he said, going on to emphasize that it's not influenced by transcendental meditation. “I think people would probably recognize it,” he continued, underscoring that it will be the kind of movie people expect from the name David Lynch.

So something to ponder for now, and we'd wager we're not going to get much more until Lynch decides he's ready. But we're ready for his freaky return, whenever that may be.
