Listen Up Philip
You're going to be hearing a lot more from us about Alex Ross Perry's "Listen Up Philip," which is to be released in the fall. We've already called it one of the The Best Films Of 2014 So Far, which probably isn't a surprise since it also made our list of The Best Films Of The 2014 Sundance Film Festival. And with the movie headed to the Locarno Film Festival to unspool internationally, some new clips have arrived.

Top Of The Lake
One of the The Best Films Of 2014 So Far and one of The Best Films Of The 2014 Sundance Film Festival, there's really not enough good things we can say about Alex Ross Perry's "Listen Up Philip." The indie director hit Park City to premiere his latest and starriest movie yet, and the end result was a picture hailed for its "terrific, attention-getting performances," noting that "it is a remarkable piece of work from this distinctive writer/director." And good news for everybody is that Perry and his 'Philip' star Moss are working together again.

"DVD Is the New Vinyl" Podcast: Chuck Klosterman
Here's your Martha Stewart-esque craft tip for the month, physical media lovers: Did you know that a scratched DVD can be polished with just a dab of toothpaste? Stay away from extra-whitening product (you don't want to bleach your Criterions!), but when mixed with water and wiped clean with a microfiber cloth, a smudge of Colgate will make your discs sparkle and Sandra Bullock will stop freezing before she's torn apart by space wolves at the end of "Gravity." Sorry, was that a spoiler? We'll be more careful in the February podcast below...

2014 Breakout Talent From Sundance
Because we're usually far too busy for the partying and snowboarding, the highlights of the Sundance Film Festival are, of course, the movies themselves. But almost as pleasurable as the films, is discovering new voices and talent, and seeing for the first time the performers and filmmakers whose careers will grow and rise long after the locals have reclaimed Park City for another year.

One of the most buzzed-about films at Sundance last week was Alex Ross Perry’s latest, “Listen Up Philip,” starring Jason Schwartzman as a misanthropic novelist without a filter in what’s being called “his best role since 'Rushmore' " (read our A-grade review here). The stellar cast is rounded out by Elisabeth Moss as Philip’s long-suffering girlfriend, Jonathan Pryce as his egotist-author role model (based, most likely, on Philip Roth), and a string of past and potential paramours (Dree Hemingway, Joséphine de La Baume, Kate Lyn Sheil). Even the peripheral acting by Krysten Ritter and Jess Weixler is first-rate, allowing Perry’s work to shine like it never has before.

Even the simplest melody can sound marvelous when played by a virtuoso, and in cinema, it’s amazing what well-trained, naturally gifted professional actors can do to with even basic material. Just look at the gigantic gulf between early Joe Swanberg movies featuring unrehearsed amateurs and his more recent, creatively successful films starring professionals: there’s a world of difference. Similarly, Alex Ross Perry’s terrific third feature, “Listen Up Philip,” is a quantum leap forward from his last feature, the micro-indie “The Color Wheel,” and it’s thanks in large part to great actors making the excellent script really sing.

Shot on black-and-white 16mm film, noted for its abrasive, rapid-fire dialogue style, we'll fully admit, "The Color Wheel," director Alex Ross Perry's screwball-ish black comedy divided Playlist writers from the rest of the world, even though it was a cause celebre film for indie filmmakers and indie-championing publications. (And yet enough of us liked it to include the film's climax in our Best Movie Scenes & Moments Of 2012) Still, any time an indie filmmaker gets a shot into the big leagues, or at least a chance to work with professional actors and not their friends, it's always worth keeping an eye on. Hell, look what it did for Joe Swanberg and the Duplass Brothers, with "Drinking Buddies" and "Cyrus" easily being among their best films to date.
