Looks like the clock has run out on "24." (Sorry.) Earlier this year, everything looked good to go on the long-gestating big screen outing for the hit TV show. Kiefer Sutherland hinted that the movie would be a direct continuation of the show, set six months after the series ended, with everything gearing up to shoot next month, once the actor was done with his work on his latest Fox show "Touch." But it looks like scheduling just couldn't be worked out.

The past year has seen the boxing movie get a little bit of a resurgence. Of course, there was David O. Russell's "The Fighter," which jumped late into the Oscar race last year and went on to nab statutes for Christian Bale and Melissa Leo, and for the past two weeks, Hugh Jackman's robot boxing flick "Real Steel" has stayed stead on top of the box office. Now, fresh-out-of-bankruptcy MGM are looking to get going on a project that does not have a hobbit or James Bond in it, picking up the rights to "Southpaw," which will have Sony distributing the film.

Summit Relativity Media has been very aggressive with "Hunter Killer," earmarking the picture for a December 2012 release date for months as Phillip Noyce decided whether he was the right man for the director's chair. Though he left the project in August, Relativity continued to show faith in the adaptation of George Wallace's best-seller "Firing Point," bringing on Antoine Fuqua to direct. And with a winter start date being eyed, it looks like they have their leading men.

It has been on again, off again, on again and now, off again for Antoine Fuqua and the forever gestating "Tupac" biopic. Earlier this summer, it was reported that the director was dropping out of directing the movie in favor of doing the Eminem boxing movie "Southpaw." But then, just over a week later, production company Morgan Creek, signed Fuqua to a pay-or-play deal to keep him on the movie and show their commitment to getting the project made. Well, "Southpaw" was dropped by DreamWorks, "Tupac" still hasn't found a lead, and Fuqua is ready to work.

Well, of course he is. Still attached to the forever gestating "Tupac" biopic, Antoine Fuqua, who shows no sign of stopping signing onto things, will team with Showtime and direct a feature length documentary about notorious hip hop mogul Suge Knight.

Pugilist or pugilist-related movies are kind of having a moment right now. "The Fighter" fought its way to a strong box office haul and awards season recognition, and advance word on the MMA drama "Warrior" with Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton is very good. Down the line, MMA fighter Gina Carano toplines Steven Soderbergh's "Haywire" that will definitely cater to an audience that doesn't get served very often, which makes it all the more odd that DreamWorks has decided "Southpaw" isn't for them.

It would seem that Antoine Fuqua is doing anything but shooting the long-gestating Tupac Shakur biopic. After some drama earlier this year in which he left the project, and then was lured back in a lucrative pay-or-play deal, the wheels on that picture still seem to be at a halt and the director is still attaching himself to more options.

After a period where it looked as if Fox would take a mulligan on "The Wolverine" and bump the film to 2013 or beyond, it now looks like they've found their director. James Mangold, who has dabbled in various genres from musical biopic ("Walk The Line"), to western ("3:10 To Yuma") and horror ("Identity"), is prepared to take on his first comic book adaptation, and the announcement suggests he's the mutual pick from Fox and Hugh Jackman's camp. Mangold appears to be the top choice among an uninspired trio of potential helmers that included Antoine Fuqua and Gavin O'Connor, otherwise known as Guys You Employ When They Are Represented By The Same Agency As Someone You Want To Work With.

Production Leaning Towards Casting An Unknown In The Lead RoleAbout a weak ago, the Tupac biopic, which had been gearing up for much of the year, suddenly looked dead in the water. Director Antoine Fuqua was suddenly looking at working with another rapper, Eminem, on a boxing drama, leaving the fate of the Makaveli story on shaky ground. The rapper's mother Afeni had approved of Fuqua and with him bouncing, it would potentially put the project on hold while another suitable choice was sought out, but it appears that the producers are doing everything they can to keep the director on board.
