Things have been a little rocky over in the animation departments of Disney the last few days. No sooner was it officially announced that Oscar-winning director Bob Peterson taken was off of Pixar’s summer 2014 joint “The Good Dinosaur,” than came word that John Kahrs, the inventive animator behind last year’s Oscar-winning short film “Paperman,” has left Walt Disney Animation Studios for parts unknown.

“The Good Dinosaur”
Well, it’s official: earlier this week we reported on the rumors that Pixar director Bob Peterson (who had won an Oscar for co-directing “Up” with Pete Docter) had left what would have been his big debut as a standalone director, “The Good Dinosaur,” a tale of what would have happened if the asteroid that killed all the dinosaurs missed earth entirely. Today, Pixar has confirmed the news via the Los Angeles Times, and while they haven't named a replacement, they do say that Peterson intends to remain at the studio, which is very good news indeed.

“The Good Dinosaur”
A couple of weeks ago at the D23 Expo, during the lengthy presentation on Walt Disney Animation, there was a noticeable absentee: Pixar alum Bob Peterson, whose debut feature as a director, "The Good Dinosaur" (he co-directed "Up" with Pete Docter), was featured heavily. Co-director Pete Sohn was there, as was producer Denise Ream, plus a few members of the movie's starry voice cast (including Lucas Neff, Judy Greer and Bill Hader). Peterson's absence was conspicuously odd and according to Disney personnel on the scene, Peterson wasn't available due to "scheduling difficulties." But of course it looks like now that isn't the case: Blue Sky Disney is reporting that Peterson is officially off the project and that the movie is frantically looking for a replacement so it can make its May 30th, 2014 release date.

After “Monsters University,” next summer’s wholly unnecessary prequel to “Monsters, Inc.” (which imagines our monstrous heroes scaring their way through college), Pixar will embark on a cluster of highly original films that bring to mind the combination of adventurous storytelling and outrageous concepts that gave us, in sequential years, “Ratatouille,” “WALL-E” and “Up,” with these new films tackling everything from imagined earths, the sparks of imagination, and the Mexican holiday of Dia De Los Muertos. The first of these films (and the only one, so far, with a title) is 2014’s “The Good Dinosaur,” directed by “Up” co-director Bob Peterson and Peter Sohn, who gave us the glorious Pixar short “Partly Cloudy” and was the voice of Emile in “Ratatouille.” Details have been few and far between, although it has been acknowledged that it takes place on an alternate earth where the meteor missed and dinosaurs have evolved alongside humans, but recently the LA Times sat down with the creative principles behind the movie and got a few more nuggets of information.
