Previously MIA Director Releasing Three Films This Year In Burst Of CreativityAfter a possibly unintentional six-year hiatus Cameron Crowe is coming back in a big way in 2011. After his 2005 dramedy "Elizabethtown," (which ironically was about a guy dealing with a colossal failure), Crowe's own career went quiet for a few years. He wrote a supernatural romantic comedy called "Deep Tiki" that was to star Ben Stiller and Reese Witherspoon but that project fell apart sometime in 2008. He also tried to get a Marvin Gaye biopic off the ground, but that proved difficult as well and he shelved it in the meantime.

It looks like Cameron Crowe has been working away on a film that we didn't really know anything about. Oh sure, he has that Pearl Jam documentary coming out later this summer and the next feature film "We Bought A Zoo" will hit in time for Christmas, but before both of those we'll get a third film; another music documentary.

.This news may disappoint several people including Cameron Crowe. A long awaited Marvin Gaye biopic starring "Law & Order" star Jesse L. Martin called, "Sexual Healing," was set to begin shooting in April of 2008. Focusing on the last years of the soul singer's life, "Sopranos" actor (and producer on that version of the project) James Gandolfini was set to play Belgian promoter Freddy Cousaert who helped Gaye back on his feet to record his comeback album, Midnight Love which spawned the monster hit, "Sexual Healing." Relatively untested director Lauren Goodman was set to direct, but April 2008 came and went and basically none of us heard a peep about this project since.

It's been five years since Cameron Crowe bellyflopped with "Elizabethtown" but we still have a lot faith in the helmer and with two pictures from the director arriving this year, it's a good time to be a Crowe fan. Of course, there's "We Bought A Zoo," the dramedy that is currently in production starring Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson, Thomas Haden Church, Angus MacFadyen, Elle Fanning, Patrick Fugit and J.B. Smoove. But also on the docket is a long in the works documentary on Pearl Jam who are celebrating their 20th anniversary this year.

Has it really been that long? 2011 will mark the 20th anniversary of grunge rockers Pearl Jam and they've got a whole lot planned. Today will see the release of "Live On Ten Legs," and as the title suggests, it's a live album culled from material spanning 2003 to 2010. In the spring, deluxe reissues of their albums "Vs." and "Vitalogy" will hit store shelves but for us, the most interesting piece of anniversary-related material is a documentary helmed by one of our favorite directors.

It's perhaps not hugely surprising, considering we started as a blog focusing on the place where movies and music meet, but we have a real affection for much of Cameron Crowe's work. A former Rolling Stone journalist, and pop obsessive, few have ever used popular music quite as effectively, especially as the background of top-quality bittersweet comedies like "Say Anything," "Singles," "Jerry Maguire" and "Almost Famous."

Just a few days ago it was reported that a bevy of beautiful young women, including Scarlett Johansson, Amy Adams, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Rachel McAdams were circling the female lead in Cameron Crowe's upcoming "We Bought A Zoo," but it looks like one has emerged victorious.
