Cary Fukunaga is one of the most exciting directing talents to come along in the last few years. The 34-year-old filmmaker made a storming debut at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival with the gripping immigration thriller "Sin Nombre," and then took a severe left turn last year with the costume drama "Jane Eyre," which managed to make a much-adapted tale feel genuinely fresh, as well as demonstrating the young director's impressive versatility.

As the awards season winds to a close, and various critics groups begin red-eyed nights staying up to get those last minute screeners in before they cast their votes on the best flims of 2011, it's easy to get a myopic view of the release calendar that only includes the last four months of the year.

Gore Verbinski ProducingDirector Cary Fukunaga is anything but predictable. The eclectic helmer broke out in 2009 with his harrowing, Sundance-winning, immigration drama "Sin Nombre" and then he surprised everybody by completely changing gears; opting to get behind the camera of this year's period-piece drama, "Jane Eyre," teaming Michael Fassbender and Mia Wasikowska for a haunting version of the tale charged with an undercurrent of sexual tension. However, even before "Jane Eyre" came together, Fukunaga was revealing his all-embracing colors, talking up his plans for a musical, an African civil war drama and a time-travel film; so it's really anyone's guess where he could go next.

When tasked with reimagining Charlotte Brontë's immortal "Jane Eyre," which seems to be adapted somewhere, by someone, every couple of years, some key decisions must be made. The impulse that seems to have seized director Cary Fukunaga was to emphasize the gothic horror elements of the story, while making the narrative more structurally complex, allowing for more of Jane's back story to slip into the movie (it's the stuff most commonly left out of the multitude of adaptations).

Indie Filmmaker Also Discusses His Gestating Musical With Owen Pallett, His African Civil War Drama 'Beasts Of No Nation,' & His Good Filmmaking Fortune So FarExclusive: Delighting fans of period romance everywhere -- and kids who can't be bothered with even the Cliffs Notes of the classic Charlotte Brontë novel --"Jane Eyre" is making another appearance on screen. But rather than coming from a predictably English pedigree, the 2011 Focus Features version arrives from the seemingly unlikely source of Cary Fukunaga, a young American director with a single feature to his name, 2009's gritty immigration thriller "Sin Nombre." Fukunaga went young with his casting, opting for Mia Wasikoska ("The Kids Are All Right") to play to the title role, while Michael Fassbender ("Hunger," the dreams of many a female Playlister) takes on the brooding part of Edward Rochester.
