On The Rise, Directors, 2014
After looking at musicians, cinematographers, actors, actresses and screenwriters, there was only one natural place to go with our On The Rise series: directors. After all, film is still an auteur's medium, and the director is the one who hires all of the above, stitching together the various elements to create a final product that only they could have made.

Lauded Sundance dramas often get a lot of critical acclaim, but can’t translate that heat into awards season contention. The studios that often distribute the films are too small, the movies are too niche, etc. etc. But that feels like it might be changing in 2014. Richard Linklater’s “Boyhood” has already been snatched up by Paramount for home video (which will presumably make it easier to get in front of Oscar voters) and by all accounts, the music drama “Whiplash”— about a young musician struggles to make it as a top jazz drummer— has what it takes to get noticed outside indie circles.

Emma Watson Miles Teller
When Damien Chazelle emerged in 2009 with the lo-fi musical "Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench," he made it clear that music was going to be crucial to his narratives. This year's "Whiplash," chronicling the trials of a talented drummer, is set against the backdrop of the jazz world, and it has been a smash success. Premiering at Sundance to great acclaim, and continuing the buzz at the Cannes Directors' Fortnight, it has been Chazelle's breakout movie. So perhaps it's no surprise he's sticking with the general themes of young people, grand ambitions and bringing along Miles Teller once again.

2014 Breakout Talent From Sundance
Because we're usually far too busy for the partying and snowboarding, the highlights of the Sundance Film Festival are, of course, the movies themselves. But almost as pleasurable as the films, is discovering new voices and talent, and seeing for the first time the performers and filmmakers whose careers will grow and rise long after the locals have reclaimed Park City for another year.
