Right now, David Fincher appears to be at a bit of a crossroads in terms of what he'll do next. Obviously, "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" sequels are still sorting out their issues before they can get made, but over the past couple of months, the director has taken good hard looks at both the thriller "Gone Girl" -- recently touted as the most likely candidate for his next movie -- and the long-developing "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea: Captain Nemo" at Disney for his upcoming projects. And the latter has just received twenty million or so good reasons why it might be his next film.

It's taken nearly a decade, but "Primer" writer/director Shane Carruth has returned this year with another acclaimed head-scratcher, "Upstream Color." A film that we raved was "thematically rich, layered and hypnotic," as the movie heads into release next month and the conversation continues to swell, Carruth is opening up to press. And an extensive, must-read piece in Wired is a good place to start, especially for those wondering just what the heck happened with his sci-fi flick "A Topiary."

It's been in the works for a while now, but according to Deadline last night, geek favorite David Fincher is inching closer to signing on to an adaptation of Gillian Flynn's novel "Gone Girl." The novel, by the former EW staffer who already had some success with thrillers "Sharp Objects" and "Dark Places" (that are also both being developed for movies), was snapped up by Reese Witherspoon not long after publication, and rave reviews and word-of-mouth have seen it become a literary phenomenon over the last year or so. Even if you haven't read it yourself, you probably know plenty of people who have, or at least have seen a subway car full of people carrying it.

There are a lot of twists on the new David Fincher-produced Netflix series "House of Cards," which follows a devious, BBQ-loving congressman (Kevin Spacey) who looks to exact revenge upon the President of the United States after being instrumental in his election (and then passed over for a high profile cabinet position). But no one could have possibly imagined how wonderful Robin Wright, who plays Spacey's wife (in a role that oscillates between Martha Stewart, Hillary Clinton and Lady Macbeth), really is. She's sleek and sexy and absolutely lethal, but sympathetic and occasionally loving too. And the accomplishment hasn't gone unnoticed. The night before the South by Southwest Film Festival kicks off, Wright will be honored at the Texas Hall Of Fame Awards, which is put on by the Austin Film Society (Wright was born in Dallas). We got to talk to Wright about "House of Cards," the Texas Hall of Fame Awards, where the next "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" is and, most importantly, her hair.

A little clarification on THR's David Fincher/"20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" report. Yes, Disney is debating whether to shoot the 3D tentpole in Australia and the trade reports there are lots of financial incentives to do so, but Fincher did his location scouting (and met with Aussie federal arts minister Simon Crean) six months ago. And yes, Brad Pitt is not set to star in the film, but that's not because this deal isn't done. Sources tell us Pitt officially passed on the David Fincher project after initially agreeing to take the lead about a month ago (the always finicky Pitt strikes again).

So what does David Fincher do after directing and executive producing a thirteen-hour political drama? He puts on a "Suit & Tie" of course. As we reported not too long ago, Fincher reteamed with his "The Social Network" star Justin Timberlake to helm the video for the first single from the actor's return to music, The 20/20 Experience. And now it has arrived, and it's pretty slick little thing.

Ten days ago, Beau Willimon, David Fincher, Kevin Spacey and Netflix hoped to change the future of television with "House of Cards," the first high-profile series to be produced by, and air exclusively on, the streaming platform. A remake of the late 1980s BBC miniseries (itself based on the book by Michael Dobbs), the 13-part first season of "House Of Cards" was adapted by "The Ides Of March" co-writer Beau Willimon who developed the series for Netflix. Executive-produced by Fincher, who also directed the first two episodes, with Spacey leading a cast that also includes Robin Wright, Corey Stoll, Kate Mara nad many more.

As far as big-budget extravaganzas go, there are a few that keenly attract our attention, and one of them is the proposed adaptation of Jules Verne's "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" that Disney is potentially mounting with director David Fincher and screenwriter Scott Z. Burns. A large-scale piece of mainstream entertainment crafted by the duo behind edgier recent fare like "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" and "Contagion" is an intriguing idea. And when we talked to Burns about "Side Effects," his new psychosexual thriller directed by Steven Soderbergh (our review here), we had to ask him about the progress of Captain Nemo and the Nautilus.

When Netflix announced that they would get into the scripted programming game, with three high profile projects all lined up for the first half of 2013 (including the Eli Roth literary-based Gothic horror project "Hemlock Grove" and the hopefully rapturous return of oddball comedy classic "Arrested Development"), it seemed that the possibilities, in theory, were endless. Netflix would be unburdened by the restraints, in both content and form, of the tired old ad revenue-dependent television model (premium cable, while remaining fuzzier, still depends on subscribers), free to provocatively reshape our formalized notion of "television" and "shows." Except, that didn't happen. At least not yet. It's first big, splashy original production, a David Fincher, Kevin Spacey and Eric Roth produced remake of the British miniseries "House Of Cards," doesn't take any bold structural or stylistic detours. But it is totally fucking brilliant just the same.

It's hard to belive that it was seven years ago when Justin Timberlake dropped FutureSex/LoveSounds, his chart topping sophomore album, but since then the pop star turned actor, lining up parts in a wide range of films from the B-movie sleze of "Black Snake Moan," to the comedies "Bad Teacher" and "Friends With Benefits," to the sci-fi "In Time" and the baseball drama "Trouble With The Curve." And while 2013 will see him appear in the Coen Brothers' "Inside Llewyn Davis," Timberlake is headed back to where he started, with a new album The 20/20 Experience dropping in the spring. And he's roped in the helmer who helped him achieve his finest performance to date, to lens the first video for the album.
