Filmmaker David Fincher’s brain works in such a way that it moves too fast for his own mouth. He’s constantly ping-ponging around in conversation to a point where he loses you and then you realize, like his beloved protagonist Lisbeth Salander, as played by Rooney Mara, he’s about five chess moves ahead of you and has been discussing four things at once.

Today I had the opportunity to sit down with filmmaker David Fincher, the director of “Seven,” “Fight Club” and his upcoming effort, “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” which lands in theaters on December 21. Fincher recently cautioned to another journalist that he doesn’t answer questions in sound-bites, “they're sound-meals.” And the director, who talks at length in rolling, circuitous, but thoughtful and considered answers wasn’t kidding.

Looking at “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo,” it’s hard not to think of the dark thriller cum procedural as director David Fincher’s “The Departed." Notwithstanding both films being inspired by/remade from acclaimed foreign predecessors, Fincher and Scorsese alike seem to be saying with them, “You wanted me to do this kind of movie? Well, here it is, motherfuckers.”

No, it's not Halloween, but given the amount of black you'll be seeing on screen (and soon in stores, more on that in a second), you might be forgiven for forgetting it's Christmas. And while the mistletoe is being hung with care, Sony are going to be dropping something a little bit nasty in your stocking in form of "The Girl With The Dragon Tatto," and in case you've been living under rock, the film will mark the arrival of Rooney Mara.

David Fincher Says He Wouldn't Have Shown 'Dragon Tattoo' To NYFCC, Sides With Scott Rudin Over New Yorker Embargo Controversy

It seems everyone has an opinion about the Scott Rudin vs. David Denby fiasco, in which the critic for the New Yorker knowingly broke the December 13th review embargo for "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" for a variety of reasons and rationalizations he flaccidly tried to explain. But of all the peple to weigh in on the subject, one man has remained curiously silent: the film's director David Fincher. But never one to hold his tongue for too long, Fincher recently spoke with the Miami Herald and let it be known he would have done things differently if he had his way. But at the end of the day, he believes critics and filmmakers are all part of the same pool and he agrees with Rudin on how an embargo break messes up a carefully planned campaign.
