One of our Breakout Directors Of 2013, there's no doubt David Lowery got a ton of attention following his beautiful breakthrough feature "Ain't Them Bodies Saints." Ever since the film premiered at Sundance last year, he's been racking up gig after gig: writing and directing "The Old Man And The Gun," with Robert Redford slated to star and produce; writing and directing former David Fincher project "Torso"; producing Alex Ross Perry's upcoming "Listen Up Philip"; writing and directing the sci-fi "Two" with Casey Affleck set to star; writing and directing an adaptation of the National Book Award Finalist “The Yellow Birds”; and recently getting behind the camera for an episode of "Rectify" for season two. And it looks like he might be making the blockbuster leap next.

Best of 2013: The Breakout Directors Of The Year
Every year, film buffs get themselves in a lather over the latest from their favorite experienced directors. The calendar is marked for the next Spielberg, I’ll be there opening day for Scorsese’s latest, I am all about Spike Lee, etc. But the real pleasure in being a film fan is stumbling upon the undiscovered, lifting a rock and uncovering a new talent, a new voice, with a brand new vocabulary for us to learn. The Scorsese films will be there for us to discover and rediscover whenever we want. In 2013, however, there was only one Shaka King picture, there was only one Lake Bell joint.

Is David Lowery having the year of his life or what? Let's recap, shall we? In January he had his hand in three films in Park City: as the writer of "Pit Stop," editor on Shane Carruth's "Upstream Color," and writer/director on his own impeccable "Ain't Them Bodies Saints." And the heat generated from that alone saw Lowery linked to a plethora of projects over the past seven months or so: writing Disney's remake of "Pete's Dragon"; writing and directing "The Old Man And The Gun," with Robert Redford slated to star and produce; writing and directing former David Fincher project "Torso" and producing Alex Ross Perry's upcoming "Listen Up Philip" toplined by Jason Schwartzman and Elisabeth Moss. And it seems that's not enough to keep him busy.

Lovers On The Run feature
“We can make it. We can make it if we run,” whispers Ruth (Rooney Mara) in David Lowery’s “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints,” which, after a limited release on Friday, begins its expansion this week. It’s a film we loved at Sundance, and one that in its gentle subversion of the “Lovers on the Run” subgenre—as the prequel comic makes clear, the events of ‘Saints’ mostly take place after the bank robbin’, outlawin’ part of the story is done—reminded us of all the other great (and not so great) films that have pitted a pair of lovers against the law.

Though it’s only open in a few theaters in Los Angeles and New York City, this weekend sees David Lowery’s gorgeous “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints” expand across the country and hit VOD. Yesterday brought a graphic novel prologue and today brings something equally delightful and cool: a short behind-the-scenes doc shot by the Ross Brothers of “45365” and “Tchoupitoulas” fame (courtesy of Film.com).

Ain't Them Bodies Saints
This past weekend, David Lowery's searing and gorgeous "Ain't Them Bodies Saints" opened in limited release, hitting a few theaters in New York City. And while you wait patiently for the movie to roll into a theater near you — it expands next weekend, while also hitting VOD (though this is one we urge you to see on the big screen) — a little extra treat has arrived to hold you over until it arrives.

Ain't Them Bodies Saints
Set in 1970s Texas, but stationed inside an authentic milieu that feels timeless and classic, David Lowery's fourth feature-length effort, "Ain't Them Bodies Saints," is the culmination of a filmmaker who has put in over a decade of work in the trenches as an editor, cinematographer, writer, electrical department hand and more (fun fact: he's also the editor of Shane Carruth's "Upstream Color"). The jack of all trades is not only fluent in several languages within the vocabulary of this medium, he clearly has an innate understanding of each. Lowery is the real deal and understands filmmaking, and this is abundantly clear in this searing, romantic crime drama and love story.

Jason Schwartzmann, Elisabeth Moss, Alex Ross Perry
Shot on black-and-white 16mm film, noted for its abrasive, rapid-fire dialogue style, we'll fully admit, "The Color Wheel," director Alex Ross Perry's screwball-ish black comedy divided Playlist writers from the rest of the world, even though it was a cause celebre film for indie filmmakers and indie-championing publications. (And yet enough of us liked it to include the film's climax in our Best Movie Scenes & Moments Of 2012) Still, any time an indie filmmaker gets a shot into the big leagues, or at least a chance to work with professional actors and not their friends, it's always worth keeping an eye on. Hell, look what it did for Joe Swanberg and the Duplass Brothers, with "Drinking Buddies" and "Cyrus" easily being among their best films to date.
