The Rover, Robert Pattinson, Guy Pearce
One of our favorite films of the summer is David Michod’s “The Rover” starring Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson. It’s a completely stark and austere tale of a man hell bent on retrieving what is his, by any means necessary. But remember, it’s not quite post-apocalyptic. “It’s post-catastrophic economic collapse!” Michod stressed in a recent Reddit AMA. Got that? Our review described it as “bleak and compelling… it shows Michôd can work with other genres and textures, and still make a film that is unmistakably his, and that is how auteurs are made.”

The Rover
Having proven with the terrific “Animal Kingdom” that he could take a potentially small story of desperate men and blow it up into something much grander, David Michôd attempts something like the opposite with “The Rover,” taking the epic, sweeping backdrop of a post-apocalyptic, dusty Australian desert, and turning in a tiny two-hander road movie that is as spartan as its predecessor was operatic.

Bone-dry, brutal and so slender it’s almost emaciated, Australian director David Michôd’s second feature, after his terrific debut “Animal Kingdom,” premiered in Cannes to high anticipation and ultimately mixed reviews. We ourselves really liked “The Rover,” which stars Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson as unlikely companions on a bleak road trip across as collapsed and exhausted near-future Australia (review here) but can understand how Michôd’s vision of a hellish ruined world, in which the first luxury to disappear is human kindness, might have proven simply too unrelentingly bleak for some; it’s the type of film into whose deliberately empty spaces one can read everything, or nothing at all.

The Rover David Michod Robert Pattinson Guy Pearce
" 'The Rover'... is a fascinating movie, flawed but occasionally brilliant, and it’s also not at all the film we were expecting," our Jessica Kiang wrote about the latest from "Animal Kingdom" director David Michod out of Cannes. And really, what else could you ask for from a summer movie? That feeling of being surprised and taken on an a ride you couldn't have predicted is rare, and one to certainly be treasured when it comes around.

The Rover
”You don't learn to fight, your death's gonna come real soon," Guy Pearce intones in this new TV spot for "The Rover." And it's a warning and challenge to co-star Robert Pattinson, with the pair dropped into a sun-cooked, post-apocalyptic future for "Animal Kingdom" director David Michod's next. And if you weren't able to attend Cannes, the good news is that the movie is shortly on its way to theaters. And it's one you'll want to watch.

The Rover
You wouldn’t think of a barren, sun-scorched movie like David Michod’s “The Rover” having much in the way of recognizable music in it. And it doesn’t really. The movie has an original score by Antony Partos (“Animal Kingdom”) that’s said to be droning, discordant and moodily ambient. But the movie also includes score, sound design and song pieces from Sam Petty, the sound designer/musician on Michod’s “Animal Kingdom” and projects like "Hesher," "Lore" and "The Grandmaster."

The Rover
"I met Rob once before I even knew I was going to film 'The Rover.' He is among the 400,000 people I met in Los Angeles when 'Animal Kingdom' came out there. (Laughing) I knew nothing about him, I hadn’t seen the Twilight movie – Still haven’t seen them, by the way. However, some of my friends had told me he was an interesting guy," director Robert Michod told Premiere magazine (via Robert Pattinson 360).
