Sandwiched between Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master" and Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained," David O. Russell's "Silver Linings Playbook" was the oddball of The Weinstein Company presentation this evening at the Cannes Film Festival. Not that there's anything wrong with it specifically, but just coming in the middle of two much more ambitious, auteur driven movies, only emphasized just how...ordinary and run-of-the-mill Russell's film felt.

David O. Russell isn't straying too far from his recent tried and true collaborations. Reports surfaced earlier this year that Christian Bale and his "Fighter" director would be re-teaming again for a Black List script called, "American Bullshit." Written by Eric Warren Singer ("The International"), and a project that Ben Affleck was eyeing in January, it appears that not only is Bale in talks to star, but Russell's most-current lead Bradley Cooper (he stars in "The Silver Linings Playbook") is on board as well.

Remember that alleged rift between Mark Wahlberg and David O. Russell? Despite their three films together -- "Three Kings," "I Heart Huckabees," and "The Fighter" -- and Wahlberg being one of the director's main cheerleaders (unlike, say, George Clooney), there may be something to the rumors. The Playlist spoke to Wahlberg last week and when the subject of Russell came up, the actor became quiet and diplomatic.

Shea Whigham isn't exactly a household name you'd instantly recognize, but a quick look at his resume will certainly ring some bells for anyone with a keen eye for the small or silver screen. At least in this writer's eyes, the actor has been doing strong work on a weekly basis as Eli Thompson, the younger brother of Steve Buscemi's protagonist Nucky on HBO show "Boardwalk Empire" with appearances in several films already this year, including "Take Shelter," "The Lincoln Lawyer" and "This Must Be The Place."

In all honesty, two years ago, few outside of Australia had heard of veteran actress Jacki Weaver. Indeed, while she worked on a number of seminal films at home in the 1970s, winning two Australian Film Institute Awards and turning up in Peter Weir's "Picnic At Hanging Rock," she'd been mostly absent from the screen since, focusing instead on stage work in Oz (most recently appearing alongside Cate Blanchett in "Uncle Vanya").
