American Hustle
Well, this might be disappointing to some. It was only one month ago when we heard that David O. Russell would be teaming up alongside “Erin Brockovich” screenwriter Susannah Grant for an ABC drama, tentatively titled “The Club.” Despite the fact that the show was already given a 13-episode order, it looks like David O. Russell will be dropping out of the project.

The ballot boxes are now closed on Oscar voting, and the fate of months worth of interviews, photo shoots, promo, publicity and more rest in the hands of those dudes from PricewaterhouseCoopers who oversee the count that determines who gets a shiny new paperweight, and who doesn't. And David O. Russell's "American Hustle" is in the mix in a big way with 10 Oscar nominations. So what can you do until Sunday night?

Today is what every director, actor, studio executive, PR person, marketing guru and consultant has been building to all awards season long—the start of Oscar voting. But that doesn't mean the campaigns end. Rather, one big push is coming (or has come) and "American Hustle" is being given one last chance to shine.

David O. Russell Martin Scorsese Steve McQueen
One of the best things about this year's brace of awards season contending directors, is that they're all great raconteurs. Whether it's the freewheeling David O. Russell, film knowledge encyclopedia Martin Scorsese or the deeply thoughtful Steve McQueen (check out a two hour talk with him here), the constant train of interviews are made more bearable because they guys are just interesting all their own. Now put 'em on stage together, and watch what happens.

David O. Russell Jennifer Lawrence American Hustle
Everything has a story, even the lowly Miracle Mop. But who would've thought the QVC bestselling product could be the basis of a movie? Well, "Bridesmaids" writer Annie Mumulo thought so. Indeed she wrote a script about Joy Mangano, the inventor of the Miracle Mop, who worked three jobs before seeing her invention become a sensation, bringing her from rags to riches. And now that screenplay and story is getting a big league boost.

10 Movies Shot, Then Scrapped
Undoubtedly the biggest news story of 2014 so far (unless Apichatpong Weerasethakul replaced J.J. Abrams as director of "Star Wars: Episode VII" in between us writing this and it going live) revolves around Quentin Tarantino's "The Hateful Eight." It was announced as being the director's next movie, only for the script to apparently leak, reportedly through one of the potential actor's agents, and that caused Tarantino to announce that he was scrapping the project, at least for the moment. (He's also suing Gawker for helping disseminate the screenplay).

25 Movies That Defined The Sundance Film Festival
As you might have noticed from the wall-to-wall level of coverage over the last week or so, the Sundance Film Festival has grown considerably from its humble beginnings back in 1978, when it was inaugurated as the Utah/US Film Festival and had a remit to showcase exclusively American-made independent films, and to promote filmmaking in the region. Robert Redford's involvement as a guiding patron led to its name change in 1981, from which point on it expanded gradually, until a kind of Cambrian explosion occurred with the arrival of "sex lies & videotape " 25 years ago this, a film that, with only a touch of hyperbole, could be said to have remade the festival into the modern titan it is today.

The Coens might want to hold on putting down that deposit for a tuxedo, as it seems their wonderful "Inside Llewyn Davis" is not registering with voters. After being shut out of the Producers Guild and Writers Guild awards nominations, the directorial duo have once again been left in the cold, this time by the DGA.

American Hustle
While "The Wolf Of Wall Street" and "American Hustle" can be loosely linked by their conman centered stories, and voiceover driven narratives, focused on an ensemble of players doing bad things, the similarities end there. Where Martin Scorsese's picture goes headlong into the extremes of bad behaviour, David O. Russell's film is more concerned on the emotional fallout and toll. It makes for a different (and arguably) far more richer and satisfying experience. And while we'll leave that debate for the comments section, here's a reminder that "American Hustle" has it's own wild side.
