THR Directors Roundtable
While the awards season can waver between excitement for the great movies hitting cinemas and excess from the endless campaigning, the real pleasure is in great filmmakers emerging from their production cocoon to talk about their work. THR has been doing a great job in rounding up some of the brightest talents and biggest contenders of the season for their roundtable talks. And their latest is no different.

American Hustle, David O. Russell
With his films “The Fighter” and “Silver Linings Playbook” elating audiences the past two years at AFI Fest in Los Angeles on their way to Oscar gold, director David O. Russell is without a doubt in stellar standing with the festival and its many attendees. That consistency to quality—especially in Russell’s recent string of crowd favorites—is why he and a swath of his contemporaries gathered in the Egyptian Theater on Friday night to celebrate the helmer’s work and unique cinematic approach. Amidst a host of technical issues—uncomfortable chairs were swapped, mics cut out—Russell also screened the first six minutes of his new film “American Hustle,” which also had to be restarted due of sound loss. You can read our impressions of the deeply funny, manic footage over here, but first we’ve compiled a few highlights from the director’s wide-ranging, insightful talk.

American Hustle
Last night in Los Angeles on the first full day of programming for AFI Fest this year, director David O. Russell and his eclectic body of cinematic work was celebrated at the historic Egyptian Theatre, and he also brought the first six minutes of his highly-anticipated new film, “American Hustle.” However, a host of technical issues—including screening the first two minutes almost completely without sound—led the director to grow a little ornery (“We should probably shut it off,” he said, before escaping the stage to settle the problem). But even those couldn’t dismantle the comic energy and early promise that his latest effort sampled.

More than five years since cameras first started rolling Spring 2008 on David O. Russell's "Nailed," the saga of the "unfinished" (at least by the director) movie continues. Earlier this year, reports surfaced that the movie was headed to some kind of release before the end of 2013, and while that's probably not happened, it seems some wheels are turning on the film that could yet find it seeing the light of day.

Out Of The Furnace
It really is beginning to look a lot like Christmas, particularly if you're a fan of Christian Bale. The man has hung up the cape and cowl, but has been staying busier than Bruce Wayne at the Playboy mansion. The actor has two movies coming in December, released within weeks of each other: the gritty midwestern crime drama "Out of the Furnace" and the glitzy, true story inspired con flick "American Hustle." And some fresh looks have arrived for both.

American Hustle Christian Bale Amy Adams
Okay, we've seen the hair and the cleavage, and had a decent little chuckle and smirk, but what does the final shape of David O. Russell's "American Hustle" actually look like? Well, a trailer has now arrived and this looks like an assured, entertaining piece of pop culture time travel.

Vince Vaughn, David O. Russell
The Vince Vaughn brand maybe isn’t “in trouble” per se, but it’s not doing that great either. How so? Well, “The Internship” opens this weekend and it’s a big, broad comedy co-starring Vaughn and another relatively big comedy star Owen Wilson. Keep in mind, “Wedding Crashers” from 2004 that starred Vaughn and Wilson is the 4th highest R-rated comedy of all time domestically ($209 million) behind two ‘Hangover’ movies and “Ted," and it’s the 10th highest grossing R-rated movie domestically ever. That’s not anything to sneeze at.

While we anxiously await the oddball awesomeness David O. Russell is cooking up with "American Hustle," let's take a victory lap with "Silver Linings Playbook." The screwball rom-com nabbed 8 Oscar nominations resulting in a Best Actress win for Jennifer Lawrence, who shined among a uniformly excellent ensemble in the tale of one man's journey to find a happy medium between his mental illness and the troubles in his life. It's charming, winning stuff, and one extra moment that didn't make it to theaters is now available for you to enjoy at home.
