Stray Dog, documentary
When “Winter’s Bone” writer and director Debra Granik ventured to Missouri to make the film, she returned with more than she expected — the subject of her next film, in the form of Ron “Stray Dog” Hall, a biker and Vietnam vet with a heart of gold and a head full of nightmares. Granik brings an un-showy, observational documentary style to this intimate look at Stray Dog’s life, navigating his trusty Harley along Missouri’s open road, with his new Mexican wife, Alicia, riding on the back of the bike.

Given that “Winter's Bone” helmer Debra Granik has supplied star turns to not only Jennifer Lawrence but Vera Farmiga as well, it's surprising to see her name mentioned still on so few projects. Luckily however, change is in the wind, and since Granik dropped her “Pippi Longstockings” adaptation from her slate, she's been announced to direct an adaptation of Russell Banks' “Rule of the Bone,” and now's she set to shoot an upcoming pilot for HBO.

While this isn't exactly new -- The Telegraph reported it as far back as February -- the project seems to be flying completely under the radar (IMDB doesn't even have it listed). But that two-month-old interview with author Russell Banks in The Calgary Herald is still yielding some nuggets of news as he confirms that "Winter's Bone" director Debra Granik is writing and helming an adapation of his novel "Rule Of The Bone," a film which he'll executive produce.

After the acclaim of her sophomore feature film "Winter's Bone," writing a treatment with an eye on the director's chair for a Pippi Longstocking movie isn't exactly what we had envisioned for Debra Granik.

Every year, we wake up for the Academy Award nominations expecting a surprise, hoping the same ten or fifteen movies don't keep getting referenced, honored, what-have-you. Last year, the Academy did a decent job as the field of Best Picture candidates swelled to ten, allowing for more exposure for films from different categories. We're not going to go around endorsing "District 9" as one of that year's finer films, but we were happy it got to sit at the table.

After two gritty films -- "Down to the Bone" about a mother battling a drug addiction and this year's "Winter's Bone" following a young woman navigating the tricky moral terrain of her not-quite-lawful family -- writer/director Debra Granik is ready to get real paid. Or at least deliver the film that won't leave you with a hollowed out feeling in the pit of your stomach.
