Prisoners
While there's only a handful of reviews in at the moment, Warner Bros.' abduction crime drama "Prisoners" currently stands at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and 95% on Metacritic. Yes, those grades will surely drop when more reviews come in but this is the shorthand, easy way of saying "Prisoners," starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal, was very well-received when it premiered at the Telluride Film Festival this past weekend. If anything the early buzz indicates that those grades may not drastically change, "Prisoners" already seems well loved.

While he didn't get the win in 2011, Denis Villeneuve's Oscar nominated "Incendies" put the helmer on the map, Hollywood called and he suddenly found a few more options on his plate. Last year, he came on board the long developing Black List script "Prisoners" (which recently landed a lead in Hugh Jackman) as well as an adaptation of Russell Banks' "The Darling" with Jessica Chastain linked to a role. And then last month, he also put an adaptation of Joe Sacco's "Footsteps In Gaza" on his pile. But it's a new project that looks like it will go first.

Quebecois filmmaker Denis Villeneuve has always been one of French-speaking Canada's most exciting filmmaking talents, thanks to the likes of "Maelström" and "Polytechnique," both of which won him Genie awards for Best Director, but last year saw him really start to make waves internationally with his Oscar-nominated drama "Incendies." That film saw him leap up Hollywood directorial wish-lists, with the filmmaker becoming attached to the long-gestating Black List script "Prisoners," while late last year saw reports that he'd be teaming up with Jessica Chastain for an adaptation of Russell Banks' novel "The Darling."

With 2011 winding down, all eyes are now on 2012 and what the future will bring and one project that has been knocking around for a while is "Prisoners" -- but the new year should bring the film some better fortune.

2011 certainly seems to be actress Jessica Chastain’s lucky year, as she had a series of fine performances in parts both big and small in acclaimed films ranging from “The Help” to Terrence Malick’s “The Tree Life.” Throw in turns in the apocalyptic “Take Shelter” and director John Madden’s thriller “The Debt,” and it certainly feels like it’s been the breakthrough year for Chastain’s up-and-coming career.

Leonardo DiCaprio No Longer Attached To StarSo, where do we begin with "Prisoners"? How about with a bit of a history lesson, but essentially, keep in mind that of all the Black List scripts of the last few years making noise, this taut vigilante thriller may have been the white-hottest of all of them, only to drop off and practically go dark. But it's coming back to life, albeit in a very different form. We digress. Here's its inception.
