Filmmaker Derek Cianfrance took twelve years to make his sophomore effort, "Blue Valentine." A searing relationship drama about husbands and wives starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams, it quickly put the almost-forgotten director – who made his feature debut with 1998's still unreleased "Brother Tied" and had turned to documentaries in that time – firmly back on the cinematic map. His follow-up, "The Place Beyond The Pines" arrived a relatively quick two years later, but was six years in the making and Cianfrance actually had Gosling on board before 'Valentine' had even begun shooting.

Of all the films that premiered at TIFF last year, few arrived under such an air of mystery as Derek Cianfrance's "The Place Beyond The Pines." With only a couple of official images, but no posters or trailers, the tone and scope of the movie remained under wraps prior to its screening. Following "Blue Valentine," would the film be a similarly intimate and narrowly focused story or something completely different? The answer is that "The Place Beyond The Pines" is an ambitious epic that is cut from some of the same thematic tissue as Cianfrance's previous film, but expands the scope into a wondrously widescreen tale of fathers, sons and the legacy of sins that are passed down through the generations.

This week finally sees the limited release opening of "The Place Beyond The Pines," Derek Cianfrance's follow-up to “Blue Valentine" starring Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Eva Mendes, Dane DeHaan and many more. A searing drama about family and legacy, the movie earned a rare A-grade review from us when it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. We recently got the chance to sit down with Gosling (and most of the principal cast) of 'Pines' earlier this month and during our conversation with the "Drive" actor we also asked him about his upcoming directorial debut, his collaboration with Terrence Malick and more.

These days, Ryan Gosling is coming to define “Indiewood”. His brand of subtle gestures and billboard bankability is rapidly making him an icon of the not-quite-mainstream (we’ll let his Mouseketeer days slide), while the indie-convert Bradley Cooper is similarly redefining himself in the wake of “Silver Linings Playbook.”

Dick's Sporting Goods Derek Cianfrance
Tied game. 2-2 count. Runners on first and third. The pitcher checks on the runner at third, then attempts to pick off the guy on first. His focus now squarely on the next pitch. He gets in position, winds up, and… you’ve got yourself an incredible ad directed by Derek Cianfrance (“Blue Valentine”) and shot by Peter Deming (“Oz the Great and Powerful”). In one single take, Cianfrance and Deming perfectly capture the mounting, and often prolonged, tension that occurs during a baseball game. The ad was made for Dick’s Sporting Goods.

With the glut of projects being hawked at the American Film Market, it's not a surprise that sometimes little things, like details, are left on the side of the road. So this morning when it was reported that The Weinstein Company had the sales rights to "Eastern Promises" writer Steven Knight's "Chef" (or "Untitled Chef Project" depending on who you ask), without much else, we figured it was par for the course. But thanks to a heads up from an eagle-eyed reader (thanks jtm!), there is much more than meets the eye on this.

“I'm interested in telling stories about families,” Derek Cianfrance, the director of “The Place Beyond The Pines,” said this week during the Toronto International Film Festival, where his hotly anticipated drama finally premiered to much acclaim. Cianfrance stormed Sundance in 1998 with “Brother Tied,” a picture that was critically acclaimed at the festival, but then vanished afterwards. It wasn’t until twelve years later that he returned with his sophomore feature effort, “Blue Valentine,” a searing family drama about a marriage in irreparable decay, starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams, which put him squarely back on the map.

It has been two years since Derek Cianfrance emerged with his raw and intimate "Blue Valentine," and coming into TIFF with his latest effort, the filmmaker presented a movie that was bigger in every way possible. Running well over two hours with cast including Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Eva Mendes, Dane DeHaan, Ben Mendelsohn and more, "The Place Beyond the Pines" tells a tale that spans generations and makes great use of its New York State setting. To say that we loved it would be an understatement (read our review here), but it seems the director isn't done with long form storytelling just yet.
