Is Focus Features trying to tell us something about Derek Cianfrance's "The Place Beyond the Pines"? While Ryan Gosling is credited as the lead, the film has a lot of twists and turns, and Bradley Cooper is featured in most of these new images. This is one that will surprise you.

With the glut of projects being hawked at the American Film Market, it's not a surprise that sometimes little things, like details, are left on the side of the road. So this morning when it was reported that The Weinstein Company had the sales rights to "Eastern Promises" writer Steven Knight's "Chef" (or "Untitled Chef Project" depending on who you ask), without much else, we figured it was par for the course. But thanks to a heads up from an eagle-eyed reader (thanks jtm!), there is much more than meets the eye on this.

“I'm interested in telling stories about families,” Derek Cianfrance, the director of “The Place Beyond The Pines,” said this week during the Toronto International Film Festival, where his hotly anticipated drama finally premiered to much acclaim. Cianfrance stormed Sundance in 1998 with “Brother Tied,” a picture that was critically acclaimed at the festival, but then vanished afterwards. It wasn’t until twelve years later that he returned with his sophomore feature effort, “Blue Valentine,” a searing family drama about a marriage in irreparable decay, starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams, which put him squarely back on the map.

It has been two years since Derek Cianfrance emerged with his raw and intimate "Blue Valentine," and coming into TIFF with his latest effort, the filmmaker presented a movie that was bigger in every way possible. Running well over two hours with cast including Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Eva Mendes, Dane DeHaan, Ben Mendelsohn and more, "The Place Beyond the Pines" tells a tale that spans generations and makes great use of its New York State setting. To say that we loved it would be an understatement (read our review here), but it seems the director isn't done with long form storytelling just yet.

Derek Cianfrance's "The Place Beyond the Pines" was one of the most anticipated films of the Toronto International Film Festival and, meeting lofty expectations, the film made a big splash this weekend in Canada's largest city. Starring Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Eva Mendes, Ray Liotta, Rose Byrne, Dane DeHaan, Ben Mendelsohn and standout newcomer Emory Cohen, reviews of 'Pines' were largely glowing (you can read our A-grade review here), a bidding war for the North Amercan rights started almost immediately and the the film finally landed in the arms of Focus Features.

We've not actually asked him, but we suspect strongly that the favorite film of the last few days of Kevin Jagernauth, our man on the ground at the Toronto International Film Festival, is "The Place Beyond The Pines," director Derek Cianfrance's follow-up to the acclaimed "Blue Valentine," which reunites him with star Ryan Gosling, as well as bringing in Bradley Cooper, Eva Mendes, Ray Liotta, Dane DeHann and more, for an epic, decades-spanning crime saga.

Of all the films arriving at TIFF this year, few are premiering under such an air of mystery as Derek Cianfrance's "The Place Beyond The Pines." With only a couple of official images, but no posters or trailers, the tone and scope of the movie remained under wraps. Following "Blue Valentine," would the film be a similarly intimate and narrowly focused story or something completely different? The answer is that "The Place Beyond The Pines" is an ambitious epic that is cut from some of the same thematic tissue as Cianfrance's previous film, but expands the scope into a wondrously widescreen tale of fathers, sons and the legacy of sins that are passed down through the generations.

One film that was a bit of a question mark before the Cannes Film Festival unveiled their slate last week was Derek Cianfrance's "The Place Beyond The Pines." The generational drama led by Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper was rumored to be one of the films announced, but as we know, that didn't quite happen. But it does seem the movie is near enough to the finish line that release dates are starting to appear....at least overseas.
