Breathe In, Felicity Jones
Intimate, expressive, agonizing and beautifully rendered, director Drake Doremus' third feature-length effort, "Breathe In," will be familiar to those that know the indie filmmaker's small, but already distinctive oeuvre. While similar in tone and style, his latest effort is like the darker cousin to Dormeus' wistful relationship drama "Like Crazy," possessing an intensity and tension that's emotionally bruising.

Breathe In Drake Doremus Felicity Jones
At the ripe old age of (almost) 31, writer/director Drake Doremus already has an enviable filmography, including festival favorites “Douchebag” and “Like Crazy,” the latter of which introduced American audiences to the charms of one Felicity Jones. If that’s not enough to give aspiring filmmakers apoplexy, his latest film, “Breathe In”—which premiered at Sundance in 2013—opens this week, and his next feature, “Equals,” is already brewing, starring Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult in a futuristic setting (though Doremus is not quite ready to talk about it yet).

Breathe In
Director Drake Doremus may next head to sci-fi realms in order to explore his unique angle on romance and relationships, but while that project gears up there’s still the matter of his third feature film, “Breathe In," for stateside audiences. A full year after the Guy Pearce/Felicity Jones drama debuted at Sundance and then bowed theatrically in the U.K. that summer, a new U.S. trailer has landed to tease what we’ve been missing from the “Like Crazy” helmer.

It's safe to say that writer/director Drake Doremus knows his way around complicated romances and relationships. From the long distance pangs of "Like Crazy," to the fantastical urges of "The Beauty Inside" (watch it in full here), to the domestic heat of "Breathe In," he's turned over the tangles of men and women in a variety of satisfying set-ups, and now he's looking to change up the game. Currently doing press rounds in the U.K. to promote "Breathe In" which is now in theatres there, Doremus revealed his next movie will take his preoccupations to a whole other realm.

Hoo boy, so let's recap this one: Last summer, it was reported that Barbra Streisand was going to direct her first film in sixteen years with "Skinny And Cat," and a pretty solid leading duo in Colin Firth and Cate Blanchett were found. Hooray, right? Well, nothing much was heard about it and earlier this week, Deadline dropped a nugget that the movie was still going forward. So far, so good, but here's where things get hazy...

Drake Doremus was at Slamdance and Sundance in 2009 and 2010 with "Spooner" and "Douchebag" respectively, but the indie filmmaker started to really connect on a grander scale when he started tackling relationships, crystallized with 2011's moving and award-winning "Like Crazy." A big smash at Sundance that year, it won the Grand Jury Prize for Best Dramatic Film and introduced the world at large to brilliant English actress Felicity Jones (she won a Special Jury Prize for her moving performance in the lead role).

Ok, name as many sci-fi romance movies as you can: go. Sure, you can probably come up with "The Time Traveler's Wife," or "The Adjustment Bureau," but what about good ones. "Happy Accidents," "Starman" if you're feeling generous, "Solaris," "2046," maybe "Gattaca" applies, but that's not a particular sub genre that's well-traversed.

As far as advertising campaigns go for computer products, Intel/Toshiba has really raised the bar. And while executive will wonder whether the investment will lead to more sales/awareness of their brand and products, cinephiles can just be happy it's another avenue for rising "Like Crazy" director Drake Doremus to show off his talents. And it certainly doesn't hurt that Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Topher Grace are along for the ride.

Drake Doremus seems to like being busy. The director of last year's Sundance sensation "Like Crazy" (which we think deserved to do better than it did), has not only wrapped on his next film (more on that in a moment), but he's also behind the camera for a campaign for Intel and Toshiba that has a couple interesting leads helping him out.
