The upside to directing such a genre-shifting, subversive film as “Cabin in the Woods,” as Drew Goddard did, is that it provides ample experience for whatever world he'd like to tackle next. And indeed, after a string of high-profile writing gigs, the writer/director has chosen an ambitious setting and narrative for his follow-up -- one that features a new type of horror previously unexplored by him.

Entertainment Weekly's got the goods on "World War Z," the new geo-political zombie thriller starring Brad Pitt that is scheduled to arrive this summer via Paramount and Pitt's Plan B shingle. At $170 million, it's the most expensive zombie movie ever made (going $50 million above its original budget) and the lengthy and complicated production was rumored to be in dire trouble last year.

This last week has been somewhat of a mixed bag for Steven Spielberg. Sure there’s been a whole host of Oscar nominations, but there’s also been the collapse of his highly anticipated adaptation of Daniel H. Wilson’s novel, “Robopocalypse.” The film, penned by “Cabin in the Woods” writer Drew Goddard, had already been allotted an April 25, 2014 release date, and had a tremendous lead cast being lined up including Anne Hathaway, Chris Hemsworth and Ben Whishaw. The official line from Spielberg’s spokesman was that the film was “too important and the script not ready, and it’s too expensive to produce. It’s back to the drawing board to see what’s possible.”

We here at The Playlist haven't been shy about our appreciation for writer-director Drew Goddard’s marvelously subversive entry into the horror genre, “The Cabin in the Woods,” with members of our staff doling out high praise after catching the film’s debut at SXSW in March, and eventually giving it a spot on our Best Films of 2012…So Far list over the summer. The film tells your standard tale of a bunch of horny, college-aged kids heading into the woods for a weekend getaway complete with nudity and keg stands, only to find out true terror awaits.

As the list of calamities pile up on Marc Forster’s long-troubled adaptation of “World War Z,” ranging from star Brad Pitt and Forster’s tense relationship to simply a nervous comment from Paramount, it can be hard to discern whether these contentious elements are simply a time-honored staple of studio filmmaking or something much more foreboding. However, a voice on the inside usually helps in these matters, and recently “Cabin in the Woods” writer/director Drew Goddard played down rumors of the film’s troubles, as well as his involvement on the zombie drama.

So just how much of a nightmare is Paramount's "World War Z"? By the looks of it, a zombie apocalypse would be preferable to what they're going through on the Brad Pitt tentpole. With the movie delayed to next summer, seven weeks of reshoots tentatively planned for this fall and the studio honcho admitting that so far, they've only got 45 minutes to 1 hour of a decent movie, a helluva lot of work needs to be done to prevent this from becoming a cautionary tale executives talk about in retirement. It was only last month that "Lost" and "Prometheus" scribe Damon Lindelof was brought in to try and bang out something better than what Paramount had before, but it turns out, he had a bit of help.

After much speculation, it seems that we now know the identity of Marvel's secret film that's been long targeted for a May 2014 release. And it's not "Ant-Man," or "Black Panther," or "Runaways," or "Doctor Strange." It's "Guardians Of The Galaxy," the cosmic adventure that was a favorite in the 1970s before being revived recently.

On yesterday's "Sunday Morning" show on CBS, in a feature about "Avengers" writer/director/super-geek Joss Whedon the first footage from "Much Ado About Nothing," his micro-budgeted Shakespeare adaptation that he shot in a two week window during post-production on "The Avengers," debuted. And it's pretty much exactly what you'd expect (with one new aspect – more on that in a minute) – the small scale antidote to his superhero romp, which is poised to be the summer's first bona fide blockbuster (and with good reason – it rules). But things aren't so happy everywhere in Whedonville, as his recent horror movie Rubik's Cube "Cabin in the Woods" is getting an inglorious debut in other parts of the world.

Today sees the opening of "The Cabin In The Woods," one of the freshest, most enjoyable horror movies in years, one that we can only urge you to go see (read our review here). To mark its release, Time Out have polled critics, programmers and filmmakers as to their favorite horror movies, and collated their finds in a mammoth list.
