Double and Doppelgangers feature
In a culture of cellphone-snapped selfies it’s hard to imagine a time when people might have been afraid of their own image. But Facebook walls and Instagram feeds to the contrary, for the vastly longer portion of human history, to see a perfect replica of yourself was an uncanny event, impossible even, exemplified by the belief shared by some native tribes in the early days of photography, that it could take away your soul. Or perhaps they were just being super cautious about ownership of their brand image.

It was only a matter of time before Duncan Jones entered the blockbuster world. His debut "Moon" managed a huge amount with a fairly slim budget, he stepped up to a bigger canvas effectively with "Source Code," and he's been linked with big projects like "The Wolverine," "Man Of Steel" and "Catching Fire" over the last few years. But the helmer, a keen videogamer, was finally lured to the megabudget world by "Warcraft," Legendary's adaptation of the popular series of fantasy video games.

Duncan Jones, World of Warcraft
Universal Pictures and their new partners at Legendary Pictures (they said "see ya later" to Warner Bros. this year after “Pacific Rim”) have unveiled a quintet of release dates for their 2015/2016 season. Let’s get right to it. The first and perhaps most disappointing news is that Michael Mann’s untitled project (a cybercrime thriller set in Hong Kong starring Chris Hemsworth) has been dated for January 16, 2015. January is a crappy date, so it sucks, right? Well, for one, we’ll see if that date sticks, for two, Ron Howard’s Hemsworth-starring “In The Heart of The Sea” opens two months later and “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” is a few months after that, so perhaps the studio is just trying to strategize around those dates.

Sometimes, you just can't do it all. Duncan Jones is finding this out as the director has had to exit the brewing feature film on 007 creator Ian Fleming. First announced back in 2012, not much had been heard about the movie since, which would be based on Andrew Lycett's biography "Ian Fleming: The Man Behind James Bond" and focus on the author's real life spy adventures that later informed his creation of James Bond. So why has he bounced?

Sam Rockwell is one of those actors whose mere presence in a movie can elicit excitement for a project that could have otherwise easily been written off. No matter what he's in – if it's big budget nonsense like "Charlie's Angels" or something like Duncan Jones' moody, micro-budget "Moon" – Rockwell is sure to turn in a performance that's downright electric (or electrified, maybe). His newest film is "A Single Shot," which opens this weekend (read our review). A twisty, turny film noir about a down-on-his-luck hunter who makes a fatally wrong shot, killing a young woman in the woods, Rockwell is as intense as he usually is goofy, his manic energy turned inward, for a kind of bottled fury. It's quite a performance, especially considering the fine actors he's surrounded by (William H. Macy, Jeffrey Wright and Jason Isaacs are among his costars).

Sam Raimi bailed on it last summer, but Blizzard Entertainment and Legendary Pictures soldiered on, quickly hiring "Blood Diamond" writer Charles Leavitt to punch up the script (presumably the same one that left Raimi disatisfied with the prospect of directing the movie). They vowed to keep "World of Warcraft" afloat and they have done so by hiring "Moon" and "Source Code" filmmaker Duncan Jones to direct the live-adaptation of the popular video game. While "Source Code" was ambitious and bigger in scope then the intimate, small-scale sci-fi film "Moon," Jones will really be diving in head-first to big budget tentpole status with this one.

Duncan Jones is a man who's had his fair share of suitors. The one-time commercials helmer made one of the most exciting directorial debuts in recent memory with 2009's "Moon," and followed it up with last year's hugely enjoyable sci-fi thriller "Source Code," a film that managed to be a pretty modest little hit ($150 million worldwide on a $30 million budget. And as such, he's been courted for some pretty major Hollywood projects, taking meetings to direct "Man Of Steel," "The Wolverine" and "The Hunger Games" sequel "Catching Fire," but ultimately not taking any of them. Indeed, things have been quiet on the Jones front: the actor's been developing passion project "Mute" and an secret sci-fi project inspired by "Blade Runner," but all we've seen from him in the last year was a commercial for a bank.

...and then there was one. The hunt for the director to take the helm of "Catching Fire" looks to be nearing an end. Just a couple days after we reported that Francis Lawrence and Bennett Miller were in the hunt for the job, it now looks like Lionsgate has decided on their man.

With "The Wolverine" now defanged a bit thanks to Darren Aronofsky leaving the director's chair and the tragic earthquake and tsunami in Japan where the film was supposed to shoot, Fox has put the brakes on the highly anticipated sequel which apparently boasts a strong script from Christopher McQuarrie. While Hugh Jackman and the studio are eager to right the many wrongs of "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" they are wisely not rushing to get the film moving again. However, last week, intel burbled up that Fox was beginning to look at directors to take on the film with David Slade -- who pretty much had the gig prior to Aronofsky's arrival -- and Duncan Jones being mentioned as contenders and it now it looks like meetings will be taking place.
