Now that "Ant-Man" has a director in Peyton Reed ("Bring It On," "Fantastic Four"), with Adam McKay rewriting the script, the saga over Edgar Wright's sudden departure is over, right? Wrong. His exit still looms large over the movie, and likely will for a while, until he officially weighs in on what happened, or Marvel steps out from their string of press releases to talk about it. Until then, the rumor mill will continue to churn.

Has your enthusiasm for Marvel’s “Ant-Man” been sufficiently quashed ever since Edgar Wright left the project, only to see it passed over by several comedy directors in Hollywood? Well, hold the phone, your interest could dip even lower.

Is this week’s “Ant-Man”/Marvel drama finally drawing to a close? It’s been such a whirlwind of emojis I don’t even know what to think anymore. Yet who to believe? Earlier today, three men emerged as the finalists to fill the director’s chair on “Ant-Man” recently vacated by filmmaker Edgar Wright after eight years of development and what sounds like a last minute losing of nerve from Marvel in favor of something more safe and familiar.

Memorial Day has come and gone and the reverberations of Edgar Wright's exit from "Ant-Man" are still being felt. It's one of the first major stumbles from Marvel's so far very well-oiled machine, and it still has fans reeling, wondering if the comic studio who are bringing this summer's "Galaxy Of The Guardians" will ever try such a risky move again. Indeed, Wright's hire — he'd been working on the movie since 2006 — initially seemed like a vote toward stepping outside the formulaic box of most Marvel movies. But with a rewrite changing the creative direction — allegedly a "shock" to the filmmaker — and in turn snuffing out Wright's interest, it has left a lot of questions up in the air, and the most key of them right now: can "Ant-Man" make its July 15, 2015 release date next summer?

If the Edgar Wright and Marvel split over “Ant-Man” is actually less amicable than originally suggested, maybe it is more akin to a “divorce” as fans have been putting it? After all, Wright developed the project for Marvel for eight years only to walk away late last week allegedly after a script rewrite that Wright agreed to, but didn’t love.

It’s called the news dump. You don’t drop news on a Friday at the end of the day, just hours before the Memorial Day weekend because you want people to read the news. In fact, this strategy hopes that by Monday you’ll have forgotten and life will go on.

The Marvel machine, for the most part, is a carefully scheduled, well-oiled machine, allowing the comic studio to deliver at least two movies per year and keep an eye on their brewing TV and streaming projects while continuing to build out their extended universe. But today, that synchronized operation got a major glitch.

15 Thematic Trilogies
It’s quite likely that, in a few summers’ time, cinemagoing will start to resemble entering a giant narrative web, as each auditorium will be hosting a film featuring characters on their way to the plot being screened in the next theatre over. Disney, Marvel, DC—the brilliance of their crossover strategy seems only matched by the appetite of moviegoers for the results. The thought, then, of a standalone narrative, a one-off rather than a sequel springboard, is a rare phenomenon in today’s cinematic landscape, let alone the idea of linking films together only loosely, in such a way that they can't be shorthanded by sticking a "2" or a "3" on the end of the original title.

‘Ant-Man’ Moves To Former ‘Batman Vs. Superman’ Summer 2015 Release Date

With "Batman Vs. Superman" pushed back to 2016 for the official reason being that the studio wants to make it as awesome as possible, it was inevitable that some other player was going to take the vacant weekend. And Marvel has done just that in what could be seen as a bit of payback. Read More »
