The Coen Brothers, Inside Llewyn Davis
The Coen Brothers themselves have been planting the seeds of "Hail Caesar" for a while now, teasing last fall that this would be next. First conceived years ago, in what would've been part of their loose knit “Numbskull Trilogy” following “O Brother Where Art Thou?” and “Intolerable Cruelty," "Hail Caesar" was initially about a 1920s matinee film idol who takes on an Ancient Rome epic. But it seems that the sibling duo have upgraded the setting and the focus, as they gear up to finally make this one their next film.

Inside Llweyn Davis
Could "Inside Llewyn Davis" have a few more songs left in its awards season campaign? After a week that left its Oscar prospects in serious question, after being shut out by both the PGA and WGA nominations, the latest from the Coens has scored some big honors at the National Society Of Film Critics Awards.

The benefit of having a career as diverse as the Coen Brothers is that no genre or idea seems outside the realm of possibility for them—if you told us they shot second unit on “Jupiter Ascending” there might be a moment of consideration before dismissing the idea. But a number of potential projects have trickled into press rounds surrounding their excellent new film “Inside Llewyn Davis," and now it seems they may landed for certain on their next venture.

Long hours on the road, sleeping on sofas, eating very little, playing shows for little money; it's a wonder why anyone struggles to make it as a musician. But for Llewyn Davis (Oscar Isaac) there really isn't any other option to playing music. "...And what, just exist?" he counters, when his sister suggests he stops couch surfing, borrowing money and barely getting by, and re-enter the Merchant Marine. While Llewyn can't quite put into words the passion that sustains an existence perpetually on the fringes, hustling for the next dollar, it's that weary energy that drives the Coen brothers' "Inside Llewyn Davis."

Coen Brothers, Inside Llewyn Davis
With "Inside Llewyn Davis" opening tomorrow, it seems folks are already eager to find out what the Coen Brothers might do next. Thankfully, they generally don't take too long between pictures and usually have a few ideas on the boil. Earlier this week we learned they have some kind of "sandal movie" set in ancient Rome brewing (perhaps they've revisited their once mooted "Hail Caesar"—about a '20s theater group putting on a production of "Julius Casear"—that at one point had George Clooney linked to star?) and now they've teased something else they've got cooking.

So how influential are the National Board Of Review winners? Well, last year "Zero Dark Thirty" won Best Film, Best Director and Best Actress and went on to be shut out in all three categories when the Oscars rolled out. Basically, just remember that there is a gulf between critics and Academy voters (remember the year when "The Social Network" cleaned up in the all early awards?) so just take a breath. That said, it's nice to see the love.

The year 2013 may have flew by fast, but not if you’re a fan of the Coen Brothers. The first trailer for “Inside Llewyn Davis” dropped this past January, then the film had its first private screening the following month, and then made its festival premiere at Cannes in May. Since then, unless you’ve been lucky enough to see it during its festival run, you have had to wait throughout the entire calendar year to catch a glimpse of this film. Thankfully, a whole boatload of promotional materials have just been dropped so you can keep yourself occupied until the film finally lands at a theater near you.

Coen Brothers, Inside Llewyn Davis
“You always hesitate to mention these things when you are in the middle of them, because sometimes they just go in a drawer and never surface again and then people ask 'what ever happened to that thing' for the next 20 years," Joel Coen said earlier this fall at the Telluride Film Festival, before mentioning he and Ethan Coen were writing a movie about an opera singer. So while any news about what they're working on next is pretty exciting, just bear in mind that plans change, creative inspiration could elsewhere and financing could be tough to come by.

Do you really need this much more convincing to see the Coen Brothers' "Inside Llewyn Davis"? If you haven't already been swayed by the rave reviews (including ours), the stirring theme song "Fare Thee Well (Dink's Song)" (listen here), or the numerous trailers that have already captured the humorous melancholy of the movie, well, here's one more piece of advertising that will hopefully put it over the top for you.

While a new slate of films awaited first reactions in Venice, the Coen Brothers were in New York, discussing a film already branded a standout gem months before its release. When “Inside Llewyn Davis” premiered at Cannes in May to rapturous reviews, including our A-grade take, it marked a touching biopic of sorts delving into the '60s NY folk scene, and during a recent screening of the film at Telluride, the sibling directors — prolific as ever — dropped a hint as to that musical interest continuing on into a future project.
